Sea BuckthornThere is loads of sea buckthorn growing near me and I wondered if anyone had tried it and is it worth braving those huge thorns for?

It's a total pig to harvest (apart from dealing with the thorns, the berries tend to explode when they're ripe) but I kind of like the sour citrussy taste so I'm going to make some syrup with it this year.
I'd suggest you taste a berry & then see if you think it's worth the effort.

Actually the mixing it with other fruits in juicing sounds best.

I was thinking of using them in jam. Also found a recipe for Sea Buckthorn Schnapps I like sour

I made some sea-buckthorn and damson jam a few weeks ago... it's quite nice, but I prefer the damson on it's own so won't be making it again.
They're not just super sour, but super acidic as well... the flavour is quite nice though when you get past the kick in the face.

My son reckons they won't be sour enough to beat him
I'm going to pick some a try apple and sea buckthorn pie and maybe a syrup for all the vitamins. Then if it's nice maybe jam

Take thick gloves and plenty of bandages!
They're such a lot of work for so little interest, they're not (in my book) worthwhile. However, there are some things that are quite fun. Squeeze 'em straight off the plant into buckets, filter the juice through muslin (a good squeeze helps here), sweeten with plenty of honey, and you've got an interesting drink.

Packed with goodness! I'd heat that "interesting" drink to make it slightly more palatable to add to its interestingness

Is it better hot? I've not tried that. Doesn't that make it more 'medicinal' (which is how the berries always taste to me).

I am moving slowly towards using the hedgerow as a medicine chest- so yes it does but its packed with vitamins and is "good for you" so should taste a bit mediciney. Rosehip syrup and elderberry rob for coughs and colds, buckthorn for a dose of healthiness- what more could I want?

Oh, but rosehip syrup and elderberry rob don't taste of medecine to me, they taste of pure yummyness
