Sending FaxesIs there a way of sending a fax from a computer without using a phone line?
I know there are various web based fax services, but they all cost around 10p/page. While that is not a great deal, it is quite a lot more than it would be by traditional means.

It needs to end up on a phone line at some point anyway, so it'll cost whoever you use.
Doesn't the recipient have email?

I've got free minutes on my mobile, and several of my friends with landlines have free UK calls, if it was as simple as a phone call, which at the end of the day is in fact what it is, then it would be free.

There are times when a fax is better, and as it happens, no; or at least not one they've given me.

A lot of Dial-up modems have fax capabilities, and as far as I know, Microsoft still has fax tools built into Windows. That way you could use a laptop to send via a friend's landline. All depends what hardware you have though.

Yes, I can (and do) do it that way, but it is not terribly convenient.
If it is possible to use a PC to dial up and make a voice call over t'internet, then it should be possible to do the same with a fax.

Any use? I didn't read it all, if I'm honest.

Don't think so. Thanks for trying.

That works by using different compression systems to reduce the data transmitted. A fax signal would get mangled by it. Just think how bad callcentre music is...

I have found a couple of articles about fax over IP, which suggests it is possible, but there is also the small point that the thing the computer is plugged into to connect to t'internet is in fact a phone, traditionally used for voice calls.
Windows fax software seems to recognise this fact, and it comes up as an option, but if I try to send a fax through it, it just sits there doing nowt.
