Separating cream from milkHello!
After my dad's heart attack/triple bypass we don't want to give him full fat milk back home (Kenya). So mum was asking if any of you lovely folks know of any way she can get the cream out of the milk to reduce dad's fat intake. He refuses to have shop bought milk as he wants milk from his own cows not other peoples' cows.

Well, isn't it called skimmed milk 'cos you skim the cream off the top? I imagine you could stand the milk in a bowl until the cream has risen, then scoop the cream off with a shallow ladle.
Just looked it up in John Seymour's Self-Sufficiency - you need a skimming ladle with holes in. There are other methods, but that's probably easiest for home use.

I just put it in a bowl or bucket (for large amounts - did 24ltrs the other day) and let it rise overnight then literally pour the cream off VERY carefully, pushing it along the top of the milk with a spoon. gets most of it.

Don't forget that by not being homogenized, the fat in the milk is more manageable by your body. Otherwise it is absorbed too soon, too fast and too much- sure there are others on here who could put it more technically!!

bring the milk to a boil,let cool and refrigerate and then skim off the creame off the top with a slotted spoon,the cream goes great with toast and jam,also when you have enough creame collected you can churnit to butter.

Doctors usually recommend a "low fat" diet, and when asked what "low fat" is, they'll invariably say "less than 5%".
I have no idea what the quality of the milk will be in Kenya, but "Channel Island" milk is usually 5 to 6%, whereas most of the "usual suspects" i.e. friesian, holstein, etc will regularly produce about 4%.
Supermarket milk a.k.a. standardised, pasteurised, homogenised milk, is "standardised" at 3.6% so unless there is some specific stipulation for Minamoo's dad, then it's only a case of the milk hygiene (BTB, F&M, etc etc), rather than the quality, or lack of in the case of semi-skimmed rubbish.....
Just my 2 pence/cents* worth (*delete according to current exchange rate )......
