What sort of machinery are we talking, out of interest...? (before and after)

Software not hardware.
We were at one point using Zend platform on the downsizer server, but not the other servers as a php pcode cache, but there were issues with this.
Other pcode cache solutions were also very bleeding edge. So I was biding time on the grounds that I run 3 very big servers and good though a pcode cache is, the sheer excess capacity of the servers was keeping things ticking alone okay.
As we go into the summer though, the seasonal rise in server load will hit, and conveniently the pcode cache field has matured somewhat.
I have therefore installed APC, which on a couple of levels (best speed, zend optimizer compatability) is not the best, but it is the one that is likely to become core product in php6, and hence seems to me to be the train to be on.

well APC did speed things along, but there were some really iffy glitches. So we are now using eaccelerator.

It was actually slower for about half a day after you first posted. didn't like to say at the time.

Well all feedback is useful, I myself judged it faster. But there are so many factors at play no one person can really say.

True, part of the reason I'm often loath to comment on things being up and down.
