Sheep wool as pig bedding ?Hello,
I was wondering if it was a good idea to put sheep fleece in the pig's hut as bedding ?
I have some bad quality one I would otherwise be used as mulch for the trees ..
I'm wondering if they will eat it and harm them.
Thanks,
Camile

Somehow don't think that would work.
Pigs *like* straw and don't like to be too hot. Plus sheep wool doesn't break down/compost very easily.

Mochyn - what do you think?

well, my first thought was "I wouldn't do it". Not really sure why, but M-J's reasoning is sound here. Just doesn't feel right. Given the way my sow likes to do housework (organizing the bedding to her liking) I can't see that working with fleece.

you could chuck it in *with* their straw no problem? Not as a replacement for though....it does make good compost btw!

Personally I wouldn't do it.
I'd be concerned the pigs might ingest it & cause restriction/twisting of the gut which can be fatal.

Thanks guys, sounds like a no go then ..
Here is what someone said on an irish forum:
"a while back I had a sow that decided to eat some wool daggings I had lazily thrown over the fence. She was very ill after and i nearly lost her. Though I'm not sure if it was the wool or the shit i would'nt chance it again."

Ours don't eat the wool, they just arrange a bed in it (they're not daft) and whilst they would be tempted to probably eat sheep poop, they can do so and unless the sheep had something horrific that was transferable to pigs, it wouldn't do them any harm. So just don't put really poopy bits of wool in they wouldnt want poop in their beds anyway though?
