Sick chicken - need advice on what to do...I hope someone on here can offer me some sensible suggestions or at least tell me that what I'm proposing to do is the right thing.
One of my hybrid chooks started looking poorly about 10 days ago. She's a warren and about 3 years old. It's a bit of a mystery as she just doesn't look right - sitting down all the time with her tail down, and feeling very thin. Normally, I have trouble catching my chooks, but you can just stomp up to her and pick her up. Anyway, I checked all the obvious stuff - not egg bound, problems with crop, no worms in poo. Then, in an effort to learn more, I took her to the vet! Saw two vets and they had no idea either. She was given an antibiotic injection over a week ago now but no improvement. She's isolated from the other 3 now because if I put her with them, they attack her. She's eating and drinking if I stuff it under her beak, but barely moving otherwise. The front end looks healthy - bright eyes, red crest etc. But the back end just looks miserable. All the others are fine.
So I'm thinking, time to put her out of her misery? My OH saw Gent kill the chicken in Carmarthen, but I missed it. Anyway, he (Keith, not Gent) says he'll do the deed and show me how it's done.
So - does anyone have any ideas how I can fix her or am I right to put her out of her misery?
Any help or thoughts gratefully received....Carrie

From your description, I suspect she is on the way out. You could wait a bit longer, but once they lose interest in food and there isn't anything obviously wrong, I don't think she's likely to get better.
If she were my bird, I would put her down as I know I would feel worse if she died in a couple of days' time without my having intervened.

Don't apologise - it seems we all agree that it's best to end it sooner rather than later.
Thanks for your comments...Carrie

I now have just 3 chickens. Thanks for your support, folks and for confirming that I was doing the right thing. And special thanks to Gent and the organisers of the skill share for showing us how to end it in as stress free way as possible.

Well done. It's never a pleasant thing to do, but it does get easier after the first one.
