Site Categories

Nettie has suggested we add "Make you own" which make sense to me. But the display on the front page is getting a little long.

I wonder if there is a need to limit the number of categories displayed and add a link to all the categories at the end?

In some respects if you are going to have a make your own catergory the smoking/curing and home brewing could be subsumed into that

Your catergories are currently

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle
Wild Food
Cookery
Poultry and Livestock
Growing your own
Curing and Smoking
Home Brewing
Landscaping - get your digger out
Sustainable Building/Energy Efficiency
Starting Out
Home Education
Transport
IT and Home Computing

13 which is a bit much, looking at the front page you probably want about 8

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
Grown your Own
Make your own
Starting Out
Wild Food
Technology
Animals (not sure about the title for this one)
At Home

Artciles would overlap multiple catergories but I think that is unavoidable but cookery would go under make your own and possible at home, Poultry and livestock under grown your own and animals, Curing and smoking plus other butcher could go under make your own and possibly technology same with home brewing. Landscaping under at home or technology or starting out. Sustainable Building/Energy Efficiency under at home, technology and reduce, reuse and recycle etc etc

I think it will be difficult to have a short list which is very intuative better to have a good description and then subcatergories.

Bit of a teckie question this, but I think you'll understand Jema.

What's the back end linking like? Are you limited to one category per article, or is there a way you could link a single article to multiple categories? If so, you could reduce the number of categories, but be able to access the articles through any of them that are relevent.

Your not the first to ask that Very Happy but Mambo does not work like that Sad would be nice if it did.

I have added a lot of custom code to the site, but actually rewriting Mambo would cause problems with upgrading the site in the future.

Tahir has suggested moving all of Cooking, Curing smoking and home brewing under food and drink.

I think I am more in favour of leaving cooking separate, merging curing smoking and home brewing.

Merging Landscaping into grow you own.

Dropping "Transport" , "Home education" , "home computing" "Sustainable building" from the front page list, and having an "All/more categories" option at the bottom.
Bugs

Thinking about people's interests here:

consuming good food and drink in all its forms
gathering wild food (animal and vegetable)
growing food
keeping livestock
crafts and DIY
cutting waste/living sustainably in general (including better building, transport, recycling etc)
political aspects of those subjects
being more self-reliant (in health, education, entertainment, communities)

I'm just trying to think, if we can come up with a small number of very wide categories that will fit nicely on the front page, with descriptions that people will recognise as covering their own interests, and when they follow those links they'll find the same categories as at the moment. Kind of supercategories - with the idea being to have as little requirement to rearrange as possible?

With the new prospective layout, It actually only makes sense to cut 2 or 3 out.

Leaving 10 or 11 categories.
