Slap me I'm dreamingI just called Virgin Broadband and got through to a woman who had no accent I couldn't understand, who didn't ask me to reboot my PC and who intelligently understood and acknowledged the fault and promised action.
Now admittedly the fault has yet to away....

I did indeed, is that when they switch over?
Seriously on the bigotry issue, as this sort of thing can look like it skirts the edges of prejeduice my issue is with the employment practices and not the employees.
A pronounced accent on a phone support line is a pain in the backside whether that accent be Welsh, Indian or Yorkshire. If you are employing people for a job that is about communicating especially on the phone, then BBC English is a must.

I wouldn't go as far as wanting BBC English, but honestly, some of the offshore accents you get on support lines is absolutely ridiculous and pees me off to high heaven.

i find it nice to hear "english" used in all it's forms
technical german instructions with minimal diagrams is challenging
i had to back engineer how the bolt gun works
only had one call in the last few years where i couldnt understand the words ,he was trying to sell me a phone cos id just registered my new one but by the time i worked out what he wanted i felt the need to explain that i was struggling to understand him
i often resort to sign languge
some things need no words ,i was lucky enough to get drum masterclases from a chap who only spoke dominican patois and drumming ,we understood
fixing i.t. through the medium of drumming ,the future
i recon one style would ruin a stunning common language ,the complexity or simplicity of "english"is why it is becoming the world language ,oh and the english speaking world has been on tour

Clear English, not necessarily BBC English.
But equally comprehension from their end is a must.
Not had this myself, but a friend tells me of calling directly enquiries for a London number, and being asked to spell it (London). This was (he says) something that happened on a regular basis.
