Slate roof costs? One for the Welshies?I think I´ll be asking lots of "how much..." questions in the next wee while....but before I make an offer on a wreck I´ve found (apparently my love of waifs and strays extends to buildings ) I want to have some vague idea of what it costs per square meter to have a slate roof fitted (including a professional roofer to do it).
Apparently the roof has been braced (as the estate agent put it) for slates but the owner ran out of cash so has only put a corrugated roof on (lurvely). I´m guessing it´s ready for the slates to go on, but have no idea how much this would cost.....over to the oracle.....

Depends what sort of slate you've got in mind. Welsh slate is expensive - £4 a slate and more - Spanish is cheaper, Brazilian and Chinese cheaper still (down to about £1.20 a slate). There's also the option of using reclaimed Welsh slate at around £2 a slate.
How big is the roof and is it a straightforward pitched roof or does it have hips, dormers or any twiddly bits?

It´s a straightforward pitched roof, I haven´t actually seen it in reality to be able to hazard a guess, It´s an average size 2 bed house. I´d prefer to use reclaimed, though I guess it depends on price ultimately.

We live directly opposite the Bethesda slate quarry, one of the few Welsh slate quarries left. I doubt it will continue to go on for too many years.

Brazilian slates aren't nice to work with as they shatter very easily, so you can't cut them with normal slate snips; you have to use a disc cutter instead. They also don't like being nailed - it's like trying to fix china plates to your roof battens!
