smallholding status

Am about to move to a house in 6 acres of pasture. To start with the land will be used to keep my horse on but eventually I hope to have other animals and veg\fruit etc. The property is not currently registered as a smallholding.
why would you register as a smallholding (benefits\regulations) and how do you go about it? Hoe much does it cost etc
RichardW

You dont.
There is no such thing as a "smallholding registration"

You register & get a "holding" number & then can get flock & heard
numbers for you livestock.

If you plan on having
sheep
goats
pigs
cows

Then you MUST register. If just chickens then as long as you have less than 50 chickens you dont have to. If you plan on having other peoples horses that would be a change of use & need planning permission unless its current use is equine & has been for long enough.

What was its last use & for how long?

Oh & a CPH (holding) number is free.

Its also very easy to register and shouldn't put you off that the land hasn't already been registered for keeping livestock.

Though the way the present government is pushing, how long for is an unknown quantity.

Is this conspiracy theory and paranoid farmer, or an actual proposed scheme? (Both are acceptable answers.)
Rob R

The former. The BCMS being swallowed up by the RPA makes me think that, with the demise of subsidies, the RPA is being turned from a subsidy distribution to a tax collection department. Rolling Eyes

If one purchased a property that was being run as a smallholding with the necessary registration/numbers etc, would it be necessary to inform some authority if you had no intention of pursuing any similar activity?
Gervase

No, not at all. Handy to keep a record of the numbers, though, in case you're ever tempted in the future or want to sell it on or let out the land for grazing.

There is also a financial advantage - we are getting a butchery course at a local college a lot cheaper thanks to having a holding number
