So many moles - so little timeWhat shall we do? The moles are going crazy at our place and the paddocks are starting to look like sand dunes. Can you help Bodger? Or does anyone else in the area have a mole catcher they can recommend...?

Monty uses molehills for potting soil. Gather up as much as you can before Bodger comes down and does what Jasper Carrott should have done.....

I can lend you a few traps MJ if that would help.
Moles are anti social little buggers and they hate each other. They only come together ( no pun intended) for a quick Nooky session for as long as it takes and then quicky depart never to meet again.
What it means is that moles are solitary creatures for most of the year and will fight if they actually meet up with another mole.
The person who has thirty or fourty mole hills on their lawn might think that they have millions of moles, when for the reasons that I have just laid out, they will infact have just the one.
MJ. You can make a rough guestemate as to how many moles you have in your paddocks by counting how many distinct patches of mole hills you have. Some of these seperate patches can cover a considerable area.
At some time in the future, it might be worth doing an article on how to trap moles.

Will do Bodger - we're out in the paddocks this morning (just about to go) to round up the yearling sheep and check them over. So I'll have a look then. Back to you later...

Yup...
Well - wishful thinking at least. Sorry for delay - no, I wasn't wrestling with the moles...although I have secured an eviction order from the local County Court
We've got 3 paddocks - one small one and two larger ones, which added up come to about 5 acres in total. Jack (aged 12) was sent up the scaffolding to the top of the house with binoculars to have a look and he estimates: small paddock has 40, the two larger paddocks have around 30-ish and 50-ish apiece. They do all seem to be quite close together - but in those 3 distinct places.
So - Bodger, Slayer of Moles, whaddya reckon?

Half a dozen moles tops ! But they are quite industrious at this time of year. PM the adress of MJ and G mansions and I'll stick you some traps in the post and you can let me have them back at the Welsh Smallholders Show.
I'll put some rudimentary instructions on here as to how to use them and you and Gervase should have countless hours of fun and disapointment.

how many moles to make a pair of trousers do you reckon?
perhaps you could start a cottage industry and a new career could be yours
there are so many rocks in our garden that the moles probably gave up on this plot
haven't seen a single one in my garden

Pop a few musical cards down the mole runs. Fold the cards back so that they play continuosly. Drives the moles mad

One of the old wives tales that is doing the rounds is to pour creosote into the mole runs in order to deter the blighters !
This actually encourages them to dig fresh tunnels. and as for sticking windmills in the hills and the like ?
