softening cotton towelling napppies

We've been given some second hand towelling nappies that are a little hard and rough textured. How can I soften them up?

Tumble dry them Surprised

...and if you havent got a tumble dryer...?

isnt there something like cider vinegar or something I can soak 'em in?
Jamanda

Have you already washed them and hung them on the line?
James

yep, a 40-wash. I think it rained at the time, so they may have gone onto a clothes horse to dry

Try outside. I think stuff dried over a clothes horse does sometimes get a but stiff.

sounds daft, but ironing them will soften them up.

Yeah, the steam-thing, same as tumble-drying.

Ironing works, but isn't great for any fastenings or elastic.

But getting them outside and blowing in the wind is just as effective Smile

If stiff just before use give them a rub against themselves - but once on the first wee would deal with any residual stiffness that was the cloth itself, and the stiffness/apparent roughness of the cloth really doesn't impact on the skin anyway Smile

Oh - if the various methods above don't work, assume that there is detergent residue from previous washes. Cure is a soak in vinegar then wash without any detergent, and with vinegar in the drawer for the final rinse (where you would put fabric softener). Once cleared wash with no more that 2 dsp of power or 35/40ml of liquid in the wash - its sufficient to clean (assuming that you haven't overstuffed the machine so that it rinses ok) and deal with most stains (and summer is coming and the sun will deal with any residual staining pretty well Smile )

Thanks all

maybe this is why our cotton doesnt go so stiff : we only use half to three quarters of the suggested amount.
