Solar PIR lights

I'm not a fan of outdoor lighting but it seems most of public are. I don't want to go through the hassle of building regs etc to fit outdoor cable and few outside lights so I'm considering a Solar powered PIR LED light. Something like this for £20:

I have a couple of LED head lights and, when the batteries are fully charged, they give out enough light to be very useful. This one says it has "3 x double sized LEDs, to flood a 5m area with light" and having replaceable AA batteries mean I could give them a top-up charge now and again, if required.

Or something like this with 18 LEDs and 4 x AA batteries for £35:

Anyone have any experience with such an item? The only solar lights I've seen are those outdoor decorations that don't seem to work.

No experience at all with these specific lights and I know exactly what you are saying regards the older continuous usage solar lights, as in they are second to useless first generation, second generation you can get about 5 hours of low light out of them.

But there is the point, PIR lights are not really suppose to be for continuous usage, they activate for however long movement is detected so in at least theory solar powered ones with the spec I've read in your link should do what it says on the tin, as in give a limited burst of 'decent' light.

Let me know if you purchase and what you ultimately think of them, I have twin standard PIR's fitted but do wish to change to something less consuming.
