Squatting to keep Tescos out!Squat in the building they're trying to move into.
Think I'm kidding?
Here, look at this:
http://millroadsocialcentre.wordpress.com/
Now, these people say they're not anti-Tescos, they just want to put a great space to good use. And as that is a great space, and as they are putting it to good use, thats all well and good.
As the residents of that part of Cambridge seem absolutely, totally set against Tescos opening a store there, this isn't contrary to what people around there want. And as the road space doesn't seem capable of supporting even a small town-centre branch of the store, I approve of the campaign to keep Tescos out (and rather lament of how pathetic Tescos have been in weaseling out of saying they'd not move in if certain planning permissions were not given, but thats another story).
But squatting there?
Is it something that should be condemned or condoned?

when a shut due to disorder community centre became "available"it was taken for several months in a similar way ,the ex manager for the local authority was amazed how it could be run with no budget no trouble and vibrantly fun filled .if they do it well im for use of any suitable site in good ways .

Yeah, on Newmarket Road. And another stonker in Milton, and the second biggest in the country further out, in Bar Hill. This is one of the town ones, proposed to be on Mill Road, and it has had a heck of a lot of local opposition.

Should provide some competition for the Co-Op, I suppose.
I was really rather charmed by Stornoway.

On a point of information, there's only one S in Tesco. Funny how you never hear people speak of "a branch of Asda's (or Ikea's, or Iceland's)" but with Tesco the rogue S sound so readily creeps in. Is it to make it rhyme with Waitrose?

Heres the campaign site detailing the efforts to keep Tesco (got the grammar right there I hope ) out of Mill Road:

Whatever the rights or wrongs Milll Road and Romsey town have attracted squatters positive activism for years. I'm actually quite gratified to see it's all still alive and thriving. If it hadn't have been for some squatters on Gwydir street I would have literally been sleeping rough for a while in my teens.

What a cracking street to squat on!
I sort of see a noble tradition in squatting as a means of avoiding homelessness and utilising space that just isn't otherwise being used, so long as squatters aren't harming anyone or doing damage. Of course, were I owner of a property with squatters in I might take a different view...
Whether its right for this building, I don't know. Might try to pop down have a look later.

I think its good there's squatters.
trouble is the very word brings up images of crusty clothed, multi pierced, extreme eco-leftie types who, although they're by and large beautiful warm people with right-on values, look a bit suss to most of Middle England.
Met a bloke in the pub the other night who's a friend of one of the instigators of the squat - his words - 'aging, well-meaning hippie' ....
Haven't been over there to get my own opinion yet, but plan to very soon...
I recognise the dog from the pix in the website story so far - I see him and his owner racing across jesus green alot. think owner might be a big issue seller. - owner has a weeny bike and doesn't use a dog lead, holds onto the dog's collar - and dog does most of the transport work as far as I can tell!
