Starter needed please

For dinner on Sunday.

Main course is roast rib of beef, with roasted pumpkin and shallots. Possibly also some roast spuds but I fancy mash, with cabbage and probably the last runner beans. Yorkshire pudding, of course.

Pudding is likely to be three fruit tarts or pies (quince and star anise, apple and cinnamon and pear and something tarts) with home made ice cream. Probably vanilla.

But as ever, I'm struggling with just the right starter.

Any ideas?

Plenty of offal of little animals, bits of beef, typical autumn and winter veg (cabbage, kale, parsnips, Jerusalem 'chokes, squashes, pumpkins, marrows, carrots, salsify, etc.), all the dried and frozen shrooms you could wish for, tomatoes and some other autumn veg, stock, herbs, frozen veg from summer, frozen berries, good butchers, passable fish monger, sausages (frozen raw ones and cured) and plenty of decent local produce.

Aubergine pâté
goats cheese on roasted beetroot and balsamic vinegar
Marrow soup
fresh veg 'salad' with leaves and dressing.
oliveoyl

Little animal liver & mushroom pate with a relish or chutney.

Hmmm... Beetroot, yes, got that still. Goats cheese and roasted beetroot salad, bed of rocket leaves, sorrel and lettuce... Aspalls apple balsamic vinegar as the basis of a dressing... That might work Smile
marigold

Bruschetta type thing with mushrooms, toms and cheese (probably blue)

Winter veg soup

Tomato soup

Stuffed mushrooms (life's not too short - they are delicious and easy to make)

Gosh, inundated with ideas now Smile Thanks!

Parsnip soup.

Nigella has a good recipe that my girlfriends sister made and it tasted great.

Plus add garnish of parsnip crisps (sure the link isnt necessary!)

Oooh... Crisps. Home made crisps. One of my favourite things. May have to make some regardless of whether I need them for Sunday.

shreds of lightly smoked trout with salad in a balsamic dressing.

I would probably do some kind of pate or terrine with what you have, cab, though I have a thing about beetroot and goats cheese atm, they go so well together.

I'm chief of starters for our 'friends Christmas' this year, and I'm doing gravadlax with freshly baked bread rolls as one of the starters, I think, it's quite light with the big Christmas roast coming after it.

I'm usually more in the terrine camp than the pate camp, but with fruit pie for pudding and beef for main course it seems a little heavy.

I'm erring more now towards something really simple; the beetroot salad mentioend above and maybe a tomato/basil salad too.

Ooh, I do love a simple but flavoursome salad to start too Laughing

The butcher had pigeon, so pigeon breast with beetroot and goats cheese salad for starter. Should do the trick.
