straw buildings for animalsI know very very little about strawbuildings.....
But we want to build some housing for hopefully ducks and maybe pigs ( not togther...) Has anyone built with strawbales for animals, is it easy? Would it be predator proof? Thinking ducks and cyotes now
Any advice or direction to look would be good
thanks

Whitmuir Organics in the Scottish Borders have recently built a pig palace built from straw bales, with a normal shape shed frame (timber and corrugated) and roof, and bales instead of walls.
They've got a website, and I'm sure you could email them (Pete and Heather)

we built a pig shed thing with corrugated tim sheeting (curved) bolted to three old interior doors with straw bales forming the front and back
it was successful up to a point till the pigs decided to push the whole thing round the area and then pushed the bales out of the back, squealing with delight
we roped them back in several times and they pushed them out again ....you could almost hear them shouting "good game, good game" every time
but in the end it worked for the length of time we had the pigs till they went off for the chop and then i dug a lot of the waste straw into the ground and composted the rest and had some lovely veggies.......

Nanny, we put bales around our temporary pig shed too - they didn't last a day !!
Fabrice's grandfather built this shed thirty eight years ago and it's been used for chickens, ducks, and now our sheep. The bales are still the ones he used, they're not rendered on the outside, just covered with a good overhang. The bottom has wooden bars to stop the animals pushing the bales outwards or eating the straw.
