StrawberriesNever grown em (really).
Will be getting a fruit cage in spring to cover the grapes, will have enough room in there for a 30 mtr raised bed for strawbs/blueberries.
I know I want Mara De Bois, I also like the sound of Gariguette, Chelsea Pensioner and Cambridge Late Pine (which I've seen highly recommended for flavour in a book from the late 40s), all are listed here:

No idea what kind of spacing they need, hence how many to buy, we won't be ready to plant till March/April I reckon, is that a good time?

Just red this on KenMuir:
Plants should be spaced 30-40cm (12-16in) apart with a 75-90cm (30-36in) gap between rows.

One thing, they'll be fenced against birds but do you have many mice? Whenever we've grown them we've lost them to mice while still green, and when we netted them the fox trampled them all to get at the mice.

Go for Gariguette as they are very early and very prolific! Space them 2 foot apart as they grow huge after a couple of years.
Don't buy too many of any one variety (6 is fine) because you will get runners from them so can have as many as you like the next year, for free!

We don't have that big a gap between rows. About equal spacing all round: aprox 35cm.
Is your soil acid enough for blueberries?

I can vouch for Cambridge late pine.
Grew them years ago & they really are the best tasting strawberry I've eaten.
Odd shapes & not as disease resistant as newer varieties but well worth growing.
Making my mouth water thinking about them.
