subsidised compost bin offer shock!

Having just taken on an allotment and requiring something for composting asap that would not require any effort to construct (all spare available time being devoted to sorting out plot) I was delighted to take advantage of the council's compost bin offer - which - ordered over the net worked out at £9 for a 330 litre plastic darlek bin delivered to the door - fab!! Having already half filled it within a week i thought i'd get another - only to discover that within a week of getting it, the offer had changed and the subsidised bin is now £20! Sad seems the council also thought it was too much of a bargain!

should have bought 2 at the time!

2, what as in two?

My council did a deal, £9 a bin, maximum of three. Bought 6 (MIL aided and abetted), put them on lottie and managed to fill them with stable manure.

I'm now looking for 6 large rubber sink plungers to disguise them as Daleks. Wink

are there any Asian shops near you? sometimes they sell their empty spice barrels real cheap - and these are pretty huge things - ideal to make a composter from. you just need to cut a hatch at the bottom - i saw it on a TV program once.

They often come up on my local freecycle - i guess people buy them cos they're cheap and then don't use them. Anyway, worth a check on freecycle www.freecycle.org

when i was young, my dad used to use a tin water butt as a composter. you can make one out of almost anything that is the right size and shape. in fact, if you find plans on the web for making an optimum composter, it would probably work better than any you get from the council
