I can't believe who tiny they are. they are Japanese quail but I seem to have a blonde one Laughing I think the breeder had several types.

Ruby, the reason I decided to have quail was because I missed having chickens but cannot really secure an area for them and after losing all my hens and ducks in one day (wasn't even night) I decided not to have anymore for now. As quail can live in rabbit runs/hutches it'll be easier for them to be safe and they can be kept inside or in sheds too. The breeder I went to had his in a conservatory that was like a huge aviary.

I wonder whether Gervase would let me have some?

So will Gervase if I carry on suggesting new livestock... Wink
sean

You could make flippers for them and pretend that they were tiny ducks.

yep or those small indoor aviaries. If they were indoors you could probably keep them in any cage. I saw some pics online of some in those indoor rabbit cages you buy

I'd probably go for outdoor, there's a little spot I'm thinking...about 6ft x 4ft, if that'll be adequate? Might have to do some lunch time surfing, can you recommend any good sites for perusal?

Sounds good. I'm going to buy one of the hutches that has a run area underneath. Saw some covers you get for rabbit hutches too on ebay for the winter. I've been posting/reading on a quail forum and read some of the members sites. I was going to buy eggs on ebay but found a breeder just down the road from me and he was really helpful

My cat would like them Very Happy . Gorgeous pics.

I wonder if I should have some. Smile

I want some too - I always liked quail.

Do they dig? I guess they must scratch about - could they disrupt young plants?
Cathryn

They are too small to do any real damage. But they need to be caged otherwise you'd never see them again. Someone I knew used on of those bakers trays upturned and moved to different patches of grass every day.
Azura Skye

hehe : )

I was thinking that it could be possible to keep them in the garden room outside, where we have a few pot plants and I plant veg in there too.
Cathryn

Perfect probably.

(That was the right answer wasn't it? Smile )

Do we need a separate forum area for quail-drooling? Laughing
Penny

We may do ... want want want!!!!
Azura Skye

are they good little egg layers then? I had quails eggs a long time ago, and I remember really liking them as I thought they did taste creamier than chickens'.
Chez

Yes, they lay like mad. I used to keep them in my teens and pickle the eggs and sell them.
jocorless

Are you intending eating the boys then ? or will you just keep them all ?
2steps

Do we need quail lovers anonymous? Laughing

I am going to breed some more of my own but do intend to eat them... but I've never killed anything before and don't know if I will be able too Rolling Eyes
Chez

I should think you'd be able to get those pliers things to work quite well with them if you can't bring yourself to wring their necks - kind of removes you from it one step.

One thing that put me off with chickens was that I might not get it right first time and just hurt them Confused Can't see that happening with quail but I bet I end up thinking how sweet they are and how can I eat them? Embarassed Wink
