sumac/sumach seedsA friend once gave me some sumac seeds, as a spice, not to plant. They make a super salt substitute, quite astringent. I am running out of them, could one use harvested sumac seeds from the garden? I haven't tried the wholefood shop yet, I wonder if I need a Chinese or Asian specialist shop?

The stagshorn sumach that grows in UK gardens is not the same as the sumach used in Lebanese/Persian cookery though it is closely related to it. I have been told that you can still use it cookery and it has a similar lemony citrus flavour but have never tried it and as some Rhus species are toxic would probably hesitate to do so.
I've never seen it used in chinese or asian cookery.
