Sunday's Mushroom Forage

Had a quick look around in the New Forest on Sunday and things (after the frost) were not as bad as I thought.

My patch of Horn of Plenty were still there and had grown a bit. However, there was only about 6 and I could not see any new mushrooms. Lots of small mushrooms had appeared after the frost (cold shock?), e.g. Amethyst Deceivers, so I had a look at a wood that last season provided lots of Winter Chanterelles, but there was naff all. Also spotted some young Fly Agaric and a couple of tiny Ceps that were obviously only a few days old. Will go back for them later, that's if someone else hasn't pinched them.

Found a nice patch of Chanterelles too. This was a new Chanterelles spot for me even though I'd walked past it many times in the summer, when we had a glut of these mushrooms, it was the first time I'd noticed them. Then checked a known patch and they were starting to fruit too. Maybe Chanterelles are on there way back!

Still more than enough Oyster mushrooms for me to cope with, but I did notice that on one of my Oyster trees someone had taken the lot, and I do mean every single mushroom. I'd got the best of them last Wednesday but I still left more than plenty. Whoever it was had decided to leave the Porcelain fungus which was on a different part of the same dead beach tree - maybe they don't like slime.

So, all in all not that bad considering what it's been like this season. And if we get some rain I am sure it would bring Chanterelles and maybe Horn of Plenty out (both like lots of moisture). However, can't see any rain in the forecast for at least a week.

Did you check my favourite place Wink , I went there last week but found nothing. Shocked Not a sausage.
PeteS

No, but there must be Chanterelles there. I know from the past that when I find them you find them too.

I went there with the kids today, just a fun one.

I found one great big Cep.

Enough for Fay and I tonight.

Nothing else to speak of though and the trumpets aren't coming, I'll be surprised to see them this year.
PeteS

Well, Ceps are hard to come by this year. Do you think it grew since last week, or did you just miss it?
bingo

Who knows?

May have missed it last week, it was in a hedge.

I'll post a photo later.

It's certainly grown over the last few days or it would be dead. Its reasonably healthy.
PeteS

I am surprised by the lack of Chanterelles. I really got the feeling they were coming. Maybe I was just lucky.
bingo

Yeah, but most patches I know have had two grows this years they will be back next year but for now that's it.

I'm distraught, 2 Ceps for the whole season. Sad
