Swap ShopOur local environment network in the village are planning one of these. Its like a jumble sale but no money changes hands.
You bring along good condition stuff you'd otherwise chuck out for others to browse and help themselves to. There is nothing to stop you bringing stuff and walking away empty handed; equally if you have nothing to give away you can just come along and take anything of use.
The council/ charity shops will collect anything left over for recycling/selling on - that's the only bit we've really got to organise. Councils like it as it stops stuff ending up in landfill otherwise
The rules are simple - no electrical (unless you have a qualified electrician on hand to test them) no foodstuffs, no hazardous waste like paints or oil
Large items can be photographed and put on a notice board with phone numbers a bit like freecycle
Sounds simpler than a jumble sale ( minimum setting up before hand) and other than doing teas and cakes there is no money involved

Sounds really good - and a benefit of such events is that it brings the community together in a common cause - much needed in this day of social isolation through choice or circumstances.
We held various community events back in the Uk and the dividends were great - that sense of community began to develop again. Good luck.

Think I'll propose that at our next village hall meeting.

Our group is a CAG (community action group) which is an Oxfordshire thing and here is the page on swapshops from their website
http://www.cagoxfordshire.org.uk/2007countywide.htm
and this lists all the upcoming Oxon ones http://www.cagoxfordshire.org.uk/findswapshops.htm some are on a regular basis. If this trial one works for us we may well join in with regular ones as well
