Sweetcorn - from tassel to cob?Bit of a gamble trying sweetcorn outside up here, but have a healthy patch of plants with the male flowers starting to put out pollen, and today noticed my first female flower! However, getting to the point where frost is looming, so how long do I have to keep my fingers crossed before it turns into a cob? I don't like sweetcorn, so if I get just the one I'll be happy, but OH is quite fond of the stuff and is hoping for more. Anyone else had success with outside sweetcorn up North? First time we've made it to plants in three years of trying, the mice really love the seeds. Fully expect the little beasts to strip anything edible that does manage to form

The badgers got ours last year and this- one night destruction.
The cobs should be formed by now although perhaps a bit milky where you are- When did you plant early may ?

I really think you are too late, Jenna. Sweet corn needs to ripen for some time after the cobs are formed. Sorry.

Poo, I had a feeling you folks were going to say something like that . Planted in the greenhouse 9 May and out into the ground 21 June, we went for an early/fast maturing variety too. With luck we may have 4-6 more frost free weeks but the temps are dropping already. Oh well, add it to the list of things we just can't do - neighbour does well with his in the polytunnel but we just don't have enough undercover space yet.
PS, what does under-ripe sweetcorn taste like?

I hate to say it, but they take aaaaaages to mature into cobs (or seem to, don't know how long exactly, probably depends on sun and rain )
You could give a mini sweetcorn, such as minipop, a try next year.
You never know, we might get a really hot October!
