Tax bill.Just had a tax bill through, following my self assessment form. They haven't sent my form back for me to use as reference, of course, but they have changed the figures in boxes 18.1, 18.2 and 18.3.
Anyone tell me what these values are?
Course, on a letter dated March 18th, they are demanding payment by January 31st, 2008. Lackwits.

Your figures? Not got a clue.

They've told me there are charges and penalties, but not specified what they might be.
Makes it bloody difficult to pay them. I hate the revenue, they're so very, very inefficient and stupid.

What they relate to, muppet.

18.1 - Underpaid tax from earlier years included in your tax code for 2006-07
18.2 - Underpaid tax for 2006-07 included in your tax code for 2007-08
18.3 - Total tax, Class 4 NICs & student loan repayments due for 2006-07 before you made any payments on account

Indeed.
It's a random number generator. I ave them one figure, my employer another, they've made up a third.

No thanks Tell you what - we'll swap for this year's corporation tax!

Mine was 50p as well. I paid before they could lump 1,500 interest on it.

How did you manage to pay three weeks before they told you how much, then?

I know it's a bit late now but always take a copy for yourself. If you leave filing the form until 31st of Jan then they expect you to calculate how much you owe and pay it by the 31st. If they're any mitigating circumstances, such as you were not asked to fill out a return until later than normal, then you can be let off. Have you contacted them?

I normally get paid interest on what they owe me. I have tried twice to claim an on-line refund but both times there's been a problem with the IR site.

Should I just go unemployed?

No. Your wife still works.

True. Go out driving in the rush hour; beat a few kids; call it quits half-way through the working day; 23 weeks holiday a year...

And half way through the working week.

The tax man, or teachers?

I suspect that dpack has little interaction with either.

We dropped our partnership form off at the local tax office where our individual forms are processed ( which had been filed online) two days before the deadline...then a few weeks later we were hit with £100 fine EACH because the tax office said we had filed late!!
We protested and told them the form had been taken to the tax office - but apparently our partnership form is dealt with by BRISTOL not SOUTHAMPTON, so not the same office as the
individual ones!!
We have no proof that we filed - the southampton office appear to have lost it. We have appealed, and filled in a replacement form - meanwhile the small tax rebate we were due (and going to hold against next years tax) has been taken in lieu of the fine!!
No idea how we prove we took it in - we couldn't file the partnership online and we just took it and dropped it in the BIG box marked RETURNS in the tax office - no reciept.
Swine.

Ours is worse than that. We sent in both our individual returns & our partnership return in the same envelope in sept 07. The ind returns are ok but they put the partnership return on our file then removed it & now its lost but they still hit us with a £100 penalty each. This is the second time in 3 years that the same thing has happened. We have just got the first penalties removed & now have to work on them to get the second batched removed too. For all you non partnership people that get hit with a late penalty an interesting thing to know is that the penalty can not be larger than the amount you owe. So if you dont owe any thing then they cant apply a penalty (except via a partnership).

Just kick up a fuss & they'll drop it, you know you delivered it on time & they'll know you delivered it on time but they'll still try it on, they did with us- got a £100 fine for the partnership but not for the individuals (and they are to the same office).

Which they know about and haven't bothered fixing for a couple of months. I wish the system of fines worked both ways, I bet their systems would work then.
