Tax return software

Anyone do their own tax returns and file them online? I used to use Which? Tax Calc but as it keeps getting sold off to another company I've given up with them (although there is a free download if your earnings are small).

I thought I'd give the IRs own software a go this time. Anyone used it? I can't actually find it on the governments myriad or web sites (is it just me or do they have a new site each week?). I assume you have to log in before you get your mitts on it.

I always use the IR online thingy. You have to register first - they then send you your login details through the post. Always found it very logical and straightforward to use. The link to the bit you need is here: https://online.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/index.jsp

I intend to persevere with Taxcalc - I'll let you know how I get on. Have always found it very easy to use in the past.

Anyone used any other software packages for their tax returns and have any comments on how good they are?

We use the IR's own free software, and find it really easy. Wouldn't even think of paying for it. What else do the paid for packages help with? Do they suggest things that you could put in to mitigate tax and things? If that's the case, then it could be worth paying for.

I used the IR software to file the last one but I preferred the TaxCalc software as you can fill in all the details off-line and see how the tax is calculated. I might set-up a little spreadsheet to do the calculations and still use the IR software this time.

I used the IR online one barefoot boo mentioned for the first time last year and found it was fine. before I'd always done them on paper

Have I missed something? I do it by hand (well, with a calculator and a pen and paper - I'm not good with numbers) Are we not talking about adding up what you've earnt, what you're allowed to take off before they take their cut, and a percentage of the rest? I reckon the hardest bit is figuring out what's allowed and what's not (and finding all the bits of paper I swore I'd file straight away this year!)

Oh flip - is it this year it has to be in by December?

The on-line thing does a lot of that for you WW, it asks most of the questions, you just have to have the figures ready, no sums and stuff...

Well, I've managed to enter all the details on the Inland Revenue site and it's calculated the tax to the same amount as I worked it out. Quite easy to use and you can save a part filled in form.

Unfortunately it doesn't have all the forms available which a bit pathetic considering how long the IR has had to get the forms up there.

IIRC WW you should have until the end of Jan 07 to file a personal self assessment, but you will also need to make you payments by then and there are various other deadlines you may need to be aware of.

Something I learnt several years back is to create a tax return file at the end of a tax year and put everything straight in it as you receive it - makes the job much, much easier!
