Tax returns...Filed and paid up for another year. At least the online filing system works well, even if they don't have all the forms they should.
Has everyone else who needs to do one done theirs?

I did mine earlier in the year, but I probably need to start thinking about getting paperwork all in the same place because April will be upon us before we know it and I try to get my accounts done as soon after the end of the financial year as I possibly can. I'm going to be good about claiming stuff this year, to date I havent claimed any of the phone, internet, electircity against the business, and I know I can, I just was too much of a coward before.

I sent ours to the accountant on Wednesday - they do the personal ones as well as the business one. We've got another three months to get the latter sorted, which is good, because I have *no* idea where all the paperwork is from the nine months I had morning sickness .

I sent everything to the accountants before Christmas and got it back last week, paid the cheque last week
I turn my tax money into premium bonds every month and then cash them in to pay the bill. This year was great I won about £700

The only time I had an accountant do my return they made a mistake that cost me a few thousand. Luckily I claimed it back and it gave me the incentive to do my own from then on. It's not too difficult if you keep all the years paper work in a single file although I'm still waiting for a tax certificate for the last tax year.
Roll on next return, I'll be claiming back money for the first time.

I'm only, exclusively and totally on PAYE. With an accounts department to do the P bit. And they haven't. So I owe them a lot of cash, and the only way they reckon they can work it out it to put me on self assessment for a year. Useless professionals, at both ends.

Our new, Benign Accountant has already got us a rebate of several thousand by spotting that the old, Sarcastic Accountant hadn't claimed ANY maternity pay for me.
By this point I would be in love with him even if he *didn't* keep chickens.

This'll not help but once you start doing self assessment it can be hard to get off.

So I am asssured. But, I do have a letter from the Revenuse assuring me it'll be for one year only. That said, with going into business, I guess it'll be something forever. Yay.

Yes, done. Have good accountants. Always seem to get something back off the taxman, not a lot, but better than nothing.

No, not yet. I know what needs to go into what box etc, just need to double check it against the notes, and do the actual form...
It would help if they would send me the ruddy SE part of the form. Last week I rang them for the umpteent time asking where it was... (as they had sent me the Employment one for the 5th time!) Can't find it to download (even if my printer was working!) so am hoping that it will come in the post tomorrow am, as I'm supposed to return it to an office in Leicester...
No - I'm going to walk it into the office here! And if they won't take it then it will be driven somewhere else (probably cambridge, as I know where that is and it will be an excuse! )

Yes. And doubly smug because I am getting a rebate this year. If I was paying tax, the answer would have been "No"!

Yes.
But in the process realised that my last employer had under-deducted tax so I ended up paying £400 more than I thought to balance the books!

My OH has always done this - and usually won more than if he had just put into a high interest (huh) account

Are the winnings on Premium Bonds tax-free?

Yes. However, on average, premium bonds are only worth considering for higher rate tax payers unless you like the gamble each month.
The prize pot is calculated using an interest rate, currently 3.8%. So if you can get more than that after tax in a savings account, or I guess over 3.3% allowing for some of the bigger prizes you're not likely to win, then the average persons money would be better off there. If you have any spare cash ISA allowance you should be much better off there. For each £1 premium bond you stand a 1 in 21,000 chance of winning something a month.

Got our accountant to do mine for me... Mind you, I got a nice tax rebate too which will pay for all the scaffolding to come down from the house.

We always send our in before the 30th September deadline - that way we get most of the sums done for us.

If you use the Inland Revenue's online system it calculates the tax for you, so there's no difference between filing in January or September.

I tend to do mine in the first week that you can OR at the last second which is OK if you are doing it online but when you are a partnership (went that way a few years ago) I dont think you can do it online.

Hm. Just done mine. I owe nothing. Which is as it should be when you're on PAYE. But I got put on it because they reckon I owe £3300. I'm sure the difference will come to light, but I've used their figures.
I'm sure they'll get me in the end.

Wonder if their server is very, very busy this evening. Only got the final bit of info today and am trying to submit - maybe I'll set the alarm for 2am and see if it will go through then.
Can I still submit tomorrow or is that too late.

Has to be in by the 31st. Online tomorrow will be fine. Arrive by post tomorrow will be fine.

I've just noticed a strange quirk/error with the online system when you let it calculate your tax. I'll post up the details to warn others and to see if anyone knows if I've done something wrong.
I had to make payments in advance, for example £250 in Jan 07 and £250 in July 07. When I completed my 06-07 return there's nowhere to enter these payments. However, the online calculation has take one into account but not the other, so I thought I still had some tax to pay. Say my current total is £400 it said I owed £100 and I paid it.
It now seems I'm owed a refund of one of the advance payments of £250 which at least is a very welcome surprise. What's very strange is that on the working out you can print out there's no mention of the £250 but you can find it by working through the numbers. I shall call them when they're less busy and ask what's happened.

Just got the confirmation e-mail - nearly 5 hours after I clicked submit - phew.
In preparation for next year I have started a new file and put sorted out some of the stuff in it. 2007-2008 is all employed so when P60 arrives will do it immediately (if it will let me). 2008-2009 will be more complicated (hopefully) with a mixture of employed and self employed might use DH accountant for that one!!!!
Off out for supper and wine now to celebrate.

Just pinged my VAT return over. Bloody boring bloody job, but at least it's done. Tax was left in the capable (I hope! ) hands of the accountant. I've signed umpteen things, but haven't read them, but am assured that all is well.
Why do I hear, faintly, the sinister voice of an accountant going 'Mwah ha hah!'?

| Quote: | SA Online filing service problems
HMRC’s Self Assessment Online filing service has experienced technical difficulties today, which has meant that some tax payers have experienced difficulties filing online. The system is now rapidly returning to normal levels of service. A record number of 3.6 million taxpayers have already successfully filed online.
HMRC takes any disruption of service very seriously and to reflect this everyone who files electronically or by paper by midnight Friday 1 February will be treated as having filed on time.
We very much regret any inconvenience this may have caused. |
Stupid technology
