TBH Build question

Having spent the eve trolling through various plans and vids on the subject, question;

Does it have to be pine? or can it be ply.

If it has to be pine i have 12 inch planks but there only 3/4 does this matter?

if it doesn't then I can build one on sunday morning Wink

Thanks in advance......

Speaking from a position of almost complete ignorance, I have heard tell of a pair of hives made from a plastic barrel cut in half.

Based on that, I'd guess that material choice matters little.

If you mean 3/4" thick should be fine provided where you plan to put it is reasonably sheltered. I wouldn't be happy with ply...low insulation. We have eight of the things in various sizes out on a field apiary on a Welsh hillside and the ones we over-wintered all came through fine. In pine Smile .

As long as it's untreated it will be OK.
Further North I would say it would be better made from thicker timber.

Cedar is the standard wood to use, pine the cheaper version.

If I can scrounge some Cedar then I will make another, dont want to have to pay for it, the compleat build is costing a grand £0.00 Wink

I have been quoted £25 for the red cedar (and the same again to have it cut size for me). It's arriving next week. Smile

Free is good though. Smile
