that Growing your Own is the latest gardening trend?

Just been watching BBC Breakfast and seen an article that Grow Your Own is the latest gardening trend - the report came from RHS Spring Flower Show, Cardiff - Is this a good thing or just a fashion trend ?
ros

I think it's a good thing, especially all the talk of allotments - eg Gradener's world last wk - hopefully I'll soon be able to find enough people to help pursuade our town council to provide them.

I don't see what the downside's to more folk growing there own are, unless it has an impact on the veg box providers.
Mrs Fiddlesticks

got to be a good thing (but doesn't mean it won't be a fashion and will get taken over by the next big thing)

Growing own is good for the freshness of what you grow. Trust in the produce (something not yet covered in the supermarket thread actually!).Its cheaper, seasonal and good exercise. What's not to like.

Although did anyone see GWorld last week and Joe Swift on his new allotment - triangle shaped raised beds anyone??
Northern_Lad

Could be good in few years when the trend moves on and they start selling all the equiptment....(cynical? moi?)
Mrs Fiddlesticks

hopefully people will get hooked and it becomes a life long interest in food and gardening
BahamaMama

Like any trend there will be loads that jump on the bandwagon, most will fall off but some will stay and enjoy the benefits of good gardening - they could be our next generation of veg growers.

Is it just a bit of a made up story? I got the feeling grow your own went through a bit of a phase a few years back but has lost momentum in the last couple of year. Perhaps it will become a bit more popular now with rising food prices and certainly one of the most worthy causes to encourage.
Mrs Fiddlesticks

wasn't there something last year about veg seeds outstriping sales of flower seeds for the first time? Might have been B&Q or someone like that...

I don't know - it might be a bit of a made up story but like Mrs F said - we've now got Joe Swift with his allotment and triangular beds - and lots and I have noticed that lots more people at work are becoming more interested in growing their own food, even if its only a few herbs and maybe a tomato plant or 2

I'm hoping its more than just a fashion

So am I and I really think there's room for a more useful fruit and veg growing spot on the TV, perhaps a 10 min prime-time slot a couple of times a week?

It's got to be real, the Guardian are giving away seeds Laughing

Thery're just playing on guilt. Wink

I think there's a trend towards it, maybe not huge but three people in our street now grow tomatoes and herbs in their small gardens whereas none did four years ago. Hardly representative I know.

Tim has noticed an increased interest in what we do in his city office. I think he's personally responsible for encouraging at least one person to get an allotment, and two to seriously consider chickens!
colour it green

gardeners world the other week... one bloke starting his allotment (with some strange idea of 'designing' it... Rolling Eyes ) and then next woman helps family start garden in West country.. with a trip to CAT (is is enviromentally friendly to drive to Wales to find out about being environmentally friendly?) and stuff on composting, grow your own hedge etc..

yup.. thats a bandwagon..
dunno if it matters tho
tahir

Certainly trendy, there seem to be a few people our way that are talking about starting a veg plot
LynneA

Well it suits my business ideas anyway, 'cos there's quite a few who'd love to grow their own veg but don't want to get dirty.

And if you think diamond shaped beds are daft (actually, there were - far too wide), just wait till I unveil our (one day) completed allotment, with C shaped and zig zags Laughing
cab

Veg plots appearing all over the place. Sales of seedlings of veg plants at the stall on the market are well up.

Got to be good news. Anything is surely better than lawns.

My nearest Tesco has seed potatoes, shallots, jerusalem artichokes and asparagus crowns for sale (Unwins) Very Happy . And the "seasonal" aisle is full of gardening kit...

That sounds brilliant.
I shall look forward to the Grand Unveiling Very Happy

Depending on the weather, more beds should be completed this weekend. Howard has bought 2 new saws (the handle of the last one disintegrated) and is raring to go.

The plot is a lopped of triangle shape, so we're putting triangle shaped beds along the fence side, and the rotation beds are Greek Key / C shaped as rectangles were too boring.

It's definately IN - 10 years ago, we were the only new people to be showing an interest in our allotment site which was maybe 50% vacant and the rest owned by old dudes who'd been there for a million years. We managed to snare 5 plots and now, not a single free plot and there's a waiting list - I'm even sharing one of mine with my mums neighbour Shocked

I dunno if it'll last though, it'll stick for some people but i doubt it'll remain mainstream for long.
