The Downsizer virtual book swap!

How about this for an idea:-

If you've got a book of any kind to pass on, offer it here. Sender kindly pays the P&P, recipient gets it for free, but on the understanding that when they've finished with it they'll do the same and offer it back here. Possibly giving first refusal to whoever was second in line after them first time round. Obviously if they wanted to keep it and not pass it on, that's fine.

Is that too many rules? Laughing

To start us off, would anyone like Corvis - A Life With Birds? Not my book, it's my Mums but she's finished with it. Bit of a dry read though apparently. It's a hardback, and you'll probably need to be in to receive the parcel.

You're not selling it very well, Andrew Laughing

Good idea, though.
jocorless

I would love to read that book - I've a fascination with Corvids anyway

This sounds like a great idea. I was just thinking of something like this myself.

I recently indulged a childhood passion and bought myself a "pony book". I used to love those Pullein Thompson sisters. There must be a Downsizer out there with a daughter (or son) who would like a nearly new copy of "They Rode To Victory".

I also have a few books about patchwork, rag rugs, decoupage, and painted furniture that I would prefer to give to a person rather than let them take their chances in a charity shop. If this takes off I'll catalogue and photograph them.
Azura Skye

I've got Corvis and I really liked it : )

Well here's a great E-book for anyone who can read on screens, or doesn't mind printing:-
The Little Guide To Beating Procrastination, Perfectionism and Blocks: a Manual For Artists, Activists, Entrepreneurs, Academics and Other Ambitious Dreamers

Really enjoyed that.

I'd like the Pullen thompson book please for my DD
Cathryn

Do we necessarily have to return them here when we have finshed with them? Can we instead offer up another one if we really liked it and wanted to hang onto it?

We haev a lot of paperbacks that we won't want (I've told him Wink Smile ) I must try and remeber to either put them on here or bring them to the corset making weekend along with a load of other stuff.
Barefoot Andrew

That's absolutely fine. The point I was making was that if you wanted to pass on a book acquired from here, offering it back here before the charity shop would seem the Decent Thing.
A.
Cathryn

I thought so. Smile I will remember this thread as I start to sort through all the books.
Barefoot Andrew

If this idea proves a goer this thread will become miraculously sticky Very Happy

Jo, if you don't want to keep Corvis after reading it, I'd love to read it as well. Remember reading review when it came out and thinking it sounded fascinating.

In a completely different area, I seem to have acquired at least two excess paperback copies of Swallows and Amazons.Anyone for a touch of nostalgia?

I've been reading my way through all the S&A books recently, while writing my children's adventure story (also involving messing about in boats). Had forgotten just how good they are.

PM me if anyone wants one.
otatop

I just took photo's of some books, but lost my nerve about attaching them. (All I could see was loads of techie sort of text).

Anyway, here's what I've weeded out:

Rag Rug Inspirations by Juliet Bawden. This was a bit of a tug, but in my heart of hearts I know I'll never get round to rug-making.

Patchwork Quilts by Averil Colby. A lovely book with lots of plates of historic quilts and some reproduction designs and ideas.

Simple Patchwork by Alice Timmins, and Patchwork by Helen Fairfield. Both hardbacked. A bit '60ish, but good for design ideas if you ignore the "fashion" plates. (Both originally charity shop purchases).

Painted Wooden Furniture by Cate Withacy, and Simple Painted Furniture by Annie Sloan. Both stuffed with ideas about re-cycling junk furniture.

If there are any takers I could put them in the post when I go back to work on Monday week (where there are envelopes and packaging materials).

I'll go and have a look at the other bookshelves now.
Barefoot Andrew

Ooh, I'd like a Swallows & Amazons if I may. I'll PM you...
A.
otatop

I had a parcel in the post just now. I ripped off the packaging and found "Nose to Tail Eating". Thank you so much Tahir!
Barefoot Andrew

Would anyone like Crash by JG Ballard? A book I own but have never read - I saw the film first, though it was a carp and couldn't be bothered with the printed word thereafter.

Bit of a habit forming here Laughing

I may not see PMs for a couple of days, so if you'd like it, PM an address and I'll reply when I can.

Do you want them then?

Here's another from my cull:-

A Winter's Tale by Mollie Stanley Wrench MCA. 1948. Priced 3/6! Probably one for a collector of old cookery books, but lots of stuff about bottling and preserving garden produce. I'd be more than happy to pass this on to someone who would either use the recipes - or treasure it as a bit of culinary history.
VM

Sorry not done anything re: Swallows & Amazons yet - close friend has just died of lung cancer so in a bit of disarray - haven't forgotten and will get round to posting when things settled a bit.
Barefoot Andrew

No problem - at your convenience. Sorry to hear of friend.
A.
Belinda

I would love A Winter's Tale if still available - I collect 'social history' type cookery books and like making jam etc. I'll PM you my address.

In that case I'd love you to have it. I don't use it as a cookery book, and I've only hung on to it for so long because I didn't want it to end up with someone who wouldn't love it.

I can put it in the post when I go back to work next week.
Belinda

Thank you so much! I've PMd you my address. Very Happy

Bump. Any more offerings for the book bus?
A.
otatop

I must have another rummage. I've found good homes for several books through this thread, but mainly what I read on the bus these days is Murder - and there is quite a little community of Murder swappers round here!

I still have the Painted Furniture books (see earlier in the thread) if anyone is interested.

I think this is a great idea BA - and an occasional "bump" will remind us all.

Ooh, I missed that the first time around. Could I have one of them please?
I will look out something suitable to pass on myself.
Barefoot Andrew

I have about six or so novel "tasters" from the mid 1990s that were produced by London book chain Books Etc. Each chapter is an extract from a novel, and although these tasters are over ten years old it may still be possible to get the full novel.

So if anyone would like one of these - picked at random - you know what to do Very Happy
