The FiringRadio 4 Thursday 11:30 The Firing
Firing a pot is a necessary evil for some potters; a feat of endurance for others and a mystical, magical experience for yet others.
In this programme, a wide range of potters talk about their attitudes towards firing their work and their experiences of great successes and downright disasters. Raku potters talk about instant results. Wood firing potters describe teams of people stoking a kiln at 15 minute intervals over five, seven or more days and nights. A bone china potter tells of the effect an earthquake had on her kiln full of exhibition work. And one potter describes the sense of being fired himself when he had to stand by and witness his whole studio and much of his life's work go up in flames.
Presented by Emmanuel Cooper.
