Run quickly and jump over the fences. Don't bite the little boy/man on your back.

Can't remember the name of the horse, but the Jockey is retiring after the racing, so must win really!
LynneA

A good system is to look for a horse that ran its first National last year, was expected to do well, but fell / unseated / pulled up at or after Beechers second circuit. It's got me West Tip and Hedgehunter in the past, and if I get round to checking the runners, I'll use it this year.

Some bookies do odds on an Irish winner, which of late has been a good option.

Horses don't kill horses - racing people do that.

Agree.
Mr O

I have got £1 eachway on Simon 11/1 ( big betting man me!)
Marionb

I'd have done the same, (cos my son is called Simon), and also put £1 each way on Cloudy Lane.

Unfortunately this is the first time in over 10 years that my OH isnt working on Grand National Saturday so we cant put a bet on without making a special journey into town and we cant be bothered to do that Very Happy
cinders

I've put on £10 amongst 4 horses Cloudy lane,Slim pickings,Hedgehunter and baily breeze
Green Rosie

I've gone for Slim Pickings too - that should ensure it falls at the first (although I did win with Papillon a few years ago)
ros

I've got 5 all EW (one each in the household):
bewleys berry, chelsea harbour, hedgehunter, point barrow and slim pickings.

so by my usual track record avoid those - Very Happy

[i]Behind horse racing's glamorous facade lies a catalogue of suffering and death.According to the national campaign group Animal Aid, more than 400 horses are raced to death every year. Some 38 per cent of these fatalities occur during or immediately after a race, and result from a broken leg, back, neck, or pelvis; fatal spinal injuries; exhaustion; heart attack, or burst blood vessels. The other victims perish from training injuries or are killed after being assessed by their owners as no-hopers.

The punishing Grand National is Britain's longest horse race - covering a distance of four miles and 856 yards.

The horses are required to jump 30 formidable obstacles, some of which include perilous drops, ditches and sharp turns. 40 horses usually take part - an excessively crowded field, which adds to the risk of collisions and falls.

Some 35 horses have now been killed at the three-day Aintree event in the last decade. This "sport" is only kept alive through betting income and course attendance fees. Please don't back the cruelty - for you it's only a harmless flutter, but horses could pay with their lives.

Do you really want to support this ?
Mr O

I would possibly agree with all that, but today I watched at least 2 horses going over the jumps without their jockeys.

Don't see the relevance of this....
lettucewoman

if the animals were being forced to run against their will - why do they continue to jump with every evidence of enjoyment?...I'm not supporting the National paricularly - I don't bet because its soemthing I don't agree with in principle.....just watching what I see.

1657: Some sad news to bring you - McKelvey, ridden by Tom O'Brien for Peter Bowen, died after the race. BBc news

Just got back from work and I picked the winner. kermit

As far as crulety to animals is concerned of course these horses are pushed to their limit but I am sure the rest of their lives (when not racing) they are very happy. There is also something in the fact that they do run, if they didn't want too they wouldn't (this does happen sometimes). The fact that they run without a jockey only says to me that they want to run.

In short.........I would rather bet on a horse than eat Chicken In, if you know what I mean.
lettucewoman

...and Mckelvey actually died after unseating his rider, running on...and colliding with a barrier. Sad Sad

Hmmm.
I think that's it for me again. Sad

That's not good, didn't know that.

Lets face it though, humans die everyday doing their jobs and none of these horses would be alive in the fist case if it wasn't for racing.

Cold I know (and I am waiting for the stones) but life is not always nice.

Outside of the breeding shed, stallions are kept well separated from mares and other males.
When not housed in their stable, they are confined behind high fences. And to minimise any chance of a costly injury, insurance policies usually state that they must not be ridden. It is a life of near isolation and deadening routine that – barring physical breakdown – can go on for 20 or more years.
bingo

where is this info from?
bingo

There are bad people and bad people treating animals irrisponsibly in every form of animals care in this world. On the whole I think there are lots trainers and horse related folk that do care about the horses. If it was that bad it wouldn't be going on.

There are plenty more crimes against animals I worry about more.

These horses wouldn't run if they didn't want to.

Nor would frank bruno fight.

Why??

Boxing involves people bashing each other around the head....which in the long term causes damage. Long distance running doesnt.

No there isn't. If you wish to delude yourself that you are not supporting a very cruel practice when you 'have a flutter' on a horse then that is very delusional. If you think that the natural stampede instinct in a bolting horse means that it is enjoying itself, then yes, you are very blinkered.

If two bloke want to get into a boxing ring and bash seven bells out of each other that is their choice, stupid in my opinion, but at least they have the choice.

Horse racing is half a step away from cock fighting and badger baiting.

So do you think that no one should ride horses then?
Silas

Have I said that?

Can you not see the difference between riding a horse and flogging it, sometimes to death, in a race to make a few bob at the bookies?

However, the size of some of the people riding horses does make me wonder sometimes if there should not be a weight limit.
