I am seeing things look somewhat erratic The morning backup is underway, but I am not of the opinion that explains things, as it is usually done by now.

Fine last night, but currently about 20 sec before starting to load a page.
???
EDIT 42 sec to complete and redisplay the thread page after clicking submit then, 10 sec for Latest Posts, 17.7 for the last post on Cab's £120 thread, but a mere 8 to get to this edit page...

Not seeing it quite that slow here despite being on a slow connection at the minute, but there does seem to be an issue with the new database configuration
Yesterday things seemed to clear up after the daily backup completed and today this process is about 95% done, but the process is itself far slower than it should be, normally it completes by 9.30am.

this is now better than it was. have to say that other sites were equally slow (so it could have been my PC) so perhaps its BT's hamsters that haven't got enough wellie this morning?

There is now no question that the speed dies a death whilst the backup is going on. The instant it was over things got back to normal.
I may have to take things offline for a change to deal with this
