The perfect Downsizer jobBook binding. We pay £ 120 a volume now, and that is cloth binding. Leather, we are talking 6-700. And you can work from home. And there are loads of work around.
Con? You have to learn book binding. And you need some old equipment in order to get the really sweet jobs. But if you are willing to invest 3 years or so, and/or are looking for an extremely well paid trade that can be done from anywhere (as most of the business comes through the mail anyway, it doesn't matter where you live), this is it. No heavy lifting.

My father used to do bookbinding. First as his proper work for some years, then as his big hobby. When he died all his old tools were thrown away.
Sorry for that. Nobody was interested at the time.
Many of the old German books are bound by him.

£120 a volume! How do you make a profit?
I used to know David Esslemont, printer for the Gregynog Press (near Tregynon). The Press produced (and still produces, I believe) some wonderful books - everything hand-made. When David left Gregynog he continued to produce beautiful books at home on a museum piece of a press.
There is, I think, plenty of info on line on bookbinding (and paper making) courses.

I used to know someone who taught bookbinding at Brighton Uni - Jenni Grey's work about creating new books rather than restoring old ones though.

EV has a very nice book press she uses to produce her lino cuts. We also have a modern one which although not very aesthetic and nonetheless a useful bit of kit.

I was at Gregynog for a concert on Sunday. They had a limited edition book of animal drawings for sale on display. Leather-bound, gorgeous paper and stunning prints.
A snip at £6500!

This collection, which consists of approximately 2000 documents, is valued at £450,000. With the right people in the room (Gulf arabs), it could bring far more than that at an auction.

Erikht - I'll do it for £60 per volume.

Then you should contact the bookseller, Paul Wilson. He was a bit surprised over the last bill. He is the one that chooses the book binders. I just take care of the collection.

Gosh, those books are beautiful, Erihkt. Almost worth learning to re-do all my trashy novels so look frightfully intellectual
Sadly, I think himself might have a bit of fit if I changed career again. Perhaps he'd like to learn?
