Treacodactyl

Toads

Now that it's warmed up and been rather wet for the last week the number of toads looking for mates has increased this week and last night we had at least 9 of marvellous creatures in the garden including three females. Hopefully they will pick a pond to lay in, at the moment they seem to be wondering between our ponds so great care has to be taken when walking about in the garden when it's dark.

I picked up a little male last night and he instantly decided my fingers were a female; he put his arms around them and grabbed on tight before getting into 'position'. Shocked They are rather strong for their size and I feel sorry for the poor females.

Our ponds are also full of newts and about 15 clumps of frog spawn so hopefully it will be a good year for our local amphibians. We just need to remember to not fall asleep in the garden...

That's brilliant Treacodactyl. A couple of days ago you were worried about the fact you haven't (yet) been able to attract sparrows into your garden but it sounds to me like you are more than compensating by providing a perfect habitat for some of this country's OTHER endangered species!

I'm certainly curious to know why we don't have sparrows about when we have most other birds. We still have plenty to do, I've not seen a hedge hog in our garden either yet.

One of the most satisfying things though is when you try to encourage animals into the garden and not only do they turn up but they make the place their homes and bring their friends. Laughing

In a few more weeks the slow worms will start to emerge. Very Happy

Excellent, lovely image you conjur up.

I was driving around the buggers coming home last night.

You like the image of a toad trying to have it off with TD's fingers ...? Shocked

Er.. moving swiftly on -

Treac, are there any sparrows in your neighborhood, generally?

Remember, they never travel more than a couple of hundred yards from where they were born. So they may not even realise that your garden is there, despite your best efforts.

We've not had hedgehogs in the garden since the sow we saw every year died with a litter in the nest - Crying or Very sad - we adopted the little ones, fattened 'em up nicely, then released them at Avon Heath Country Park.

I've not noticed them, I'll keep a look out in my travels.
