Today, I will mostly be playing with goat skinsThis will no doubt greatly distress the cat, who seems to consider any form of leatherwork a personal insult, but hey.
We've got a big commission on, two sets of garments based in part on the 'Otzi' iceman finds of a few years ago, so I've been dutifully stockpiling skins and leather of appropriate types, and today I have to make a start on cutting it all out.
Expect silly jokes about furry loincloths from me for a while...

Sounds really cool, have fun.

What an interesting thing to work on! Will we get to see the completed garments?
|
Grimnir
|
Never mind the completed shots, will we see work-in-progress shots? I'd love to do something like this
|
sally_in_wales
|
ok, in progress shots:
About half the skins we'll use doing this project (thats a lot of goat!)
First legging being cut out, the tail stays on and tucks into the shoe to fill the gap and anchor it in place, very cunning!
Inside seam, in artificial sinew, the originals were whip stitched like this.
Final picture for the moment, a goatskin cap
We've also made a goatleather loincloth, havent taken a pic yet though. I'm sewing up the second legging even now.

No way, and you know it.

What, you actually want to see Gareth is a leather loincloth and furry leggings or are you hoping I'll do the honours
|
Grimnir

That looks fantastic fun Wish I could help out! What tools are you using, modern or neolithic?

Modern knife and needle this time, I've done plenty of leatherwook with flint and bone, and one sharp edge is as good an another in this instance (plus I can't find the rough flint to knap some fresh blades, its here somewhere... )

Now there's a thought to put me off my tea.

I said fashion shoot, not striptease...
...though now you come to mention it.

Haven't you met my brother?

I think I arrested him for speeding once and then found a nicked 10mm spanner on him

Sally - can you point me in the direction of a pattern for some goatskin slipper type things? I have a couple of patchy goatling skins that aren't much good as rugs or anything but there'd definitely be enouigh for some shoes/slippers/boots.

I think I'd be tempted to make a parcel tape model of the foot then draw on the seams as will best suit the fur and cut from there, I often find that the best way to make a new shoe pattern for something unusual
|
Stacey

Hmm, good thinking. I've managed to persuade my next door neighbour to try your parcel tape method for a corset

So you've always wanted to be snapped in a goatskin loincloth eh?

No, I have no desire to be snapped anywhere, historical interest only. Now excuse me while I clean the coffee off the monitor.

I did take a pic of Gareth in the loincloth and leggings last night, then decided that it was probably the last thing you wanted to see Will try to take a pic of the finished outfit though, that should be much less scary

are we not allowed to be the judges of that!
|
sally_in_wales
|
you asked for it
Its actually quite hard to make out how it all should look when its first made, once its all worn in a bit leather hangs so much better
|
Rob R
|
You should make Nick one, he'd love it. And so would Jonnyboy...
|
Grimnir

That looks great! I shudder to think what I'd look like in it though too many donuts I think...
|
sally_in_wales

And more strange images as our project progresses of Gareth wrapped in a lot of goatskins (and a purple bathtowel )
This is the first of the coats based on the Otzi finds. Undecided at the moment whether to leave the 'sleeves' as a cape, or to sew them up- the archaeology is unclear as to how the original went and the skins do hang better as arm capes.
|
Grimnir
|
That looks fantastic! How did you work out the pattern?
|
sally_in_wales
|
As far as possible its based on the archaeological reports of the Otzi equipment, with a lot of 'hey look, goats are shaped just right for this part of the coat' thrown in

what does it feel like to wear and move in. How practical does it feel?
|
sally_in_wales
|
Feels very warm, but I reckon its a practical design for what it was intended for, winter outdoor wear. Goat isnt terribly waterproof but for dry cold days it would be fab I think. Taking it into work today so they can decide whether they want the sleeves left as a cape of sewn up

Would you trust this man with, well, anything?
Just finished a deerskin hat to go with the outfit, words almost fail me

I think it looks great but there is a blurring of lines as to where the goat ends and the man begins..

He's been asked to do a film sequence at the end of the week wearing it to go in the gallery next to the wax model that will ultimately be wearing this lot, I think friday is going to have many comedy moments as he crawls around in the undergrowth in this get-up:lol:
