Too late this year?I've just had a birthday and been given a beekeeping suit and a promise of a top bar hive by my ex. Is there any chance of getting a colony now in time to put to bed or should I simply curb my impatience and wait till next year?

Think you are very unlikely to get something now - Especially for a TBH - You need a strong swarm to do something like that with as they need time to build the comb down from the bars - For that they also need lots of forage and that is rapidly winding down now
I'd find a local source or group and place a booking for next spring

I agree.
Make friends with some local beekeepers & try & persuade one of them to perform a shook swarm for you next April/May.
You wont have the problem then of transferring from frames to Top bars (which is fiddly) & it will cost the beekeeper less (& hopefully less for you too) as he wont be losing frames & wax just bees & an old queen.

Too late - join a group locally to you - ours ar just starting their autumn/winter talks programme. You'll find a mentor who will help you out in the spring.

Thought so. Have been a member of the local group but my membership expired and I didn't renew it as they never seemed to do anything exciting, all talks about showing honey and the like, which isn't really my thing. I'm more of an eater of honey than show- er of it!
