That's cos Cab keeps showing it to people at work. Wink

I'm surprised and impressed by "Deck on a Hill" which was I believe the first article published on the site, but was quite down the ranks. It is looking like it might threaten those mushrooms for top spot Smile

Daft really as it is scraping the barrel a bit in terms of relevence to the site, but we had to start somewhere!

*scribbles down idea for boosting hits*

Not bad....

Actually, I've posted a link to it on a yahoo group devoted to wild foods and on similar livejournal group; both of them have -tiny- readerships, but all of the readers would be people who would be ideal members here. That's about all I've doen to publicise them.
sean

So where are all the deck fetishists coming from?
jema

Bet we get search engine hits on this thread! that list is a gold mine of downsizing keywords Very Happy

Deck on a hill is a good article. It's off the wall, which is its charm.
tahir

It's nowhere near the wall Laughing
jema

Call me a sad git, but I just looked at the figures again, surprising how many of the articles have accumilated more hits in the last 20 minutes or so Smile

All are now 100 or above!

I also think Cab should be volunteering to lead winter forays for wild food!

Hopefully it is very firmly attached to the damn wall, it took us long enough with the damn engineering bricks the wall is made of Rolling Eyes

That is a tip top idea, hows about a foraging saturday next summer Cab?

Winter foraging, far more so than foraging at other times of the year, is a solitary passtime. Meaning that I'm not sharing my wild sorrel with anyone Smile
tahir

Ah, but what about my suggestion?

Most of our last house semed to be constructed using engineering bricks. I got through a lot of drill bits.

Myabe you could pick an unknown area, rather than give away the secrets?

jema
cab

How would I find an unknown area?

Naah, it's certainly do-able. It'd be best to pick somewhere simple and central and stick to 30 or so common plants and any exciting mushrooms that we came across... Let me mull it over.

Well I can look at an ordinance survery map round here and spot a lot of public areas I don't know!

But back to the thread and you will like this!

Yeah, I'd noticed that the top ten winter forages article was top article. Quite surprising that it's picking up hits so fast. Do you think there's something especially google-able in the title?

I'm thinking on doing a 'Ten things to do with Winter Mushrooms' article next, covering the best ways of using blewits, oyster mushrooms, etc.

The site stats do *not* support this theory. I would have guessed this myself, but it is not the case.

A few turn ups here!

jema
cab

Are we going to do this on some kind of seasonal basis? Top ten winter wild foods is so far out ahead, when I do the -spring- wild food article it'll take months before it starts to rate.

Do we need to do this on some kind of seasonally adjusted basis? Maybe the top ten thingy should discount hits that are more than three months old?

Or am I speaking crap?
tahir

I spose Spring foraging would get much better hits in spring (if that's what you're asking)
cab

tahir wrote:

Well, yes, of course it will. But I'm more getting at the problem that we're going to end up with articles that have been there a long time being in the top list merely because they've been there a long time; surely a list of the most popular articles should be a list of what's got the most hits in the previous (x) period of time?
tahir

I see what you mean, like most popular this week. I think it's a question of whether we have that data available and how we deal with it. Jema's the man, we'll wait and see what he says.
jema

I have already Aludded to the fact that I think we are already seeing an "in the top ten because its in the top ten factor".

I hadn't thought about the seasonal issue which is actually quite crucial.

It may be that I need to add a hack that will allow us to scrap "Most Popular" and any automation, and instead have "Editors Choice".

I think human choice is going to be a lot better in the long run.

jema
tahir

But can't we have the last 7 days top picks or something?
jema

tahir wrote:

Well the last 7 days would be a repat of the front page to a large degree.

Is "Most Popular" that important on the front page?

jema wrote:

Dunno, but how are we going to index the articles, there's quite a lot in the pipeline.
jema

Not sure I see the problem?

We could actually have a page dedicated to most popular of all time. That is not a problem.

New articles would continue to get front page space.

The Editor would once a week or so, rearrange the "Editors Picks" which would replace Most Popular.

The Forum would continue to show "Latest Articles".

We would help the editor by taking a snapshot once a week of the figures and hence if a picked article showed poorly the following week it would be a good candiadate for dropping etc.

jema
cab

That's one way. Isn't there a simple mechanism by which total hits could be replaced by, say, hits per month? So that an articles total hits is divided by how long it's been there to give it a score?

Or is that a bugger to do?
jema

I am sure I could do this, and if this is the consensus I will get it done. But that in of itself would not solve the seasonailty issue which is quite important to the forum.
