Trouser problem

Thanks to the reducing your BMI thread, my fave 'sailor' trousers are now a size too big but I love them too much to not try and adjust them to fit somehow.

So far, I've moved all the buttons as far as I practically can, see pic ...

I'm a bit nervous about opening the main central seam or making darts and getting them to lie flat but I'll have a go if someone could provide a bit of virtual handholding.

Has anyone got any other ideas.

Thanks
EV

p.s at least there's no zip to make a hash of!

I am no help, but it's a nice problem to have. Laughing

I'm no expert, but I imagine you could unpick the waistband facing as much as possible to allow access to the seams, take in all seams a little (tack first and check fit carefully), then stitch it back together and replace the facing as neatly as possible (you'll have to seam it front and back as well as at the sides, to take up the slack). Taking in all the seams a bit might leave you with an acceptable fit with buttons and back darts in roughly the right place, but it might not! Hopefully someone more expert than me will be along soon.

P.S. I don't think you need to remove the buttons!

I'd start by just tacking the back of the waist band internally without opening it up at all, you can make quite effective "darts" like that.

Can't wear your favourite trousers?

It looks like there are set-in pockets that would get in the way of darts though...

Yup, there are Marigold.
And as they're Boden trousers (in their sale of course!), they're pretty well made and actually woman shaped, so I don't want to make a botch job with lumps and bumps.

As they are a favourite pair of trousers, I would in all honesty take the coward's way out and take them to someone who knows what they are doing.

And then come home and practise on a pair that weren't quite so important.

Or bring them to the Mid Wales mid winter meet and sit in a corner crying hoping some skillfull sewing person will take pity on me? Wink

If you only need to take in a little bit you could try moving the buttons: top buutons (say) 3/4", next down 1/2", then 1/4". I don't think moving the lowest ones would help, but moving the others as I've suggested would give a graduated shape and lose 1 1/2' at the waist.

Shall I bring my sewing machine on the Saturday then?

You could still get away with a single one down the back rise

Or just wear them as hipsters

You'd have a bit of a saggy crunch.

Make that Boden-woman shaped - I am a woman, but Boden clothes are definitely not cut to fit my shape! Laughing

I take that back. I am absolutely not a 6' tall, 7 stone Boden slimthing.
Their clothes just have waists which is what I like.

I find they fit me well too - they definitely work for 'hourglass' shapes.

Taking the model out first helps.

I'm going to try and work 'saggy crunch' into inappropriate junctures of everyday conversation.

I once successfully colluded with a friend to get the words 'moist gusset' into the Daily Mail. It worked twice - once deliberately, and the second time when some brain-dead Femail researcher recycled a caption from the cuttings file!
