Unidentified fruit

Can someone please identify this fruit which is growing out of a field hedge in my back garden.

The fruit is soft and sweet

They work now.
They look like wild plums or bullaces to me. How big are they? About cherry size?

Yes about cherry size I thought they might be wild plum.

I have bullace in my garden they are about the same size possibly slightly smaller but green

Yup! Got two gallon upstairs! Also make nice chutney, if a bit fiddly to get the stones out.

Could be sloes, but they tend to be a bit smaller than cherries. Best way to tell is to take a bite into one - if its either sweet or sharp, then its a bullace, if it feels like someone has filled your mouth with cotton wool, then its a sloe Smile

It said in the first post they were sweet, which was why I discounted sloes.

I think "bullace" covers a multitude of fruits - as does plum if you think about it - you get yellow ones and red and purple etc.

Aha! Yours is an Essex Bullace!
