Unsolicited commission

Nice when things come unexpectedly innit?

I had an email from someone who accidently ended up on my web site. Wanted to know if I could make a pair of goblets for them for their celtic wedding to give a toasdt in mead at the hadnfasting ceremony.

I have made 2 goblets as examples and if they choose one I will make a duplicate .

This is made from prickly pear and is 6 1/2" tall

This is cherry and is 7" tall

Both finished inside with copious layers of melamine laquer to render liquid proof.

I really find this duplication bit diffficult. Here's my effort. Now let's see what the customers think. All I can see aare the differences

I think the fact that they are slightly different is nice. It accentuates their unique handmadeness, and could represent the fact that couple while not exactly the same can still compliment and complete each other.

Nicely put.
I liked the cherry, just to be different.
Bodrighy

IMO for a wedding the fact these are similar enough but slightly different reflects on his and hers but being one of the same ... i think they're beautiful
catbaffler

They're so beautiful and I'd echo the view that, like the married couple, they don't need to be absolutely identical - better that each has its own character.
Bodrighy

Well I emailed pictures of both pairs and he came back that as they couldn't decide they'd buy both sets and use the one they didn't choose as a wedding present for their sister. Who am I to complain Laughing

I would like to know what this is because it definitely is not prickly pear wood, the prickly pear is a species of Opuntia cacti and a)I doubt you would get wood big enough from them to create anything that big and b) cacti wood tends not to be very dense often holey and mostly not very suitable for turning.

Why I know about cacti:

And from one woodturner to another nice job Smile

I* queried it at first and then a woodworker in the states gave me a link.

Check this out.

Apparently it also gets this big in some parts of the States as well.
The wood itself gives off a dust when turned, no shavings and it has a really strange texture a bit like Banksia nuts.

And thanks
