Using recycled roof shingle

Ok maybe a daft question but we have a very small flat roof that had some small grey gravel covering it. The flat roof was replaced a couple of months ago and the grey shingle ended up on the garden.

Can / should we shovel it back up on the new roof. Is it just a cosmetic thing and will it matter if we get some of the normal pea shingle mixed in with it (the stuff got put on the path)?

The pebbles are used as a means of reflecting the sun to prevent the flat roof cracking and bubbling. I assume that the new roof is also felt? It should have either been painted with reflective paint or covered with pebbles.

I don't see any reason why normal pea shingle would cause a problem on the roof.
