using your computer when its idleAt www.grid.org you can download a simple programe and it uses your computer when its on screen saver to work on say a cancer research programme. Himself has had one running for years and I've just downloaded one for this machine. SETI ran one some years ago too so that you could help analyse data to look for life on other planets.As far as I know it doesn't compromise the security of your machine. |

distrubted computing can be very powerful and there are lots of space cpu cycles about on peoples domestic pcs
ensembl the project I work on uses distrubuted computing to do most of our analyses but perhaps thankfully we have a 1000cpu farm to use to we don't have to try and get volunteers to help. Even in that though there are people who sit in the lowest priority queues and soak up lots of space compute for things which aren't terribly urgent |

the website is cool, you can get some very pretty pictures especially from things like synteny view but for most people there isn't much meaningful data | ||

as far as I can make out from that - like I know what I'm talking about  - we share one gene with the common mouse!!

that data is slightly confusing. We share one gene with mouse in chr 1 -495726-504274 so in the first 50K we actually share about 17000 genes out of about 23000 genes in total nb that link is from a data mining tool and I don't know how long the query lasts in the system but you can regenerate it quite easily by unchecking the box at the top and checking the only genes with mouse orthologs box |
