Vanilla Pods...downsizer bulk buyI am going to buy us a kg from this company.
Vanilla Mart
Based in Kent, United Kingdom, we are specialist importers and retailers of quality Vanilla Pods from India. Our clientele include wholesalers, retailers, restaurants, bakeries and the discerning public!
All our Vanilla is sourced from farmers co-operatives in South India ensuring quality whilst paying a fair price to the grower. The Vanilla is grown and cured using traditional methods to ensure freshness and a distinctly rich aroma with high Vanillin content.
They work out at a ridiculously low price. Vanillin content is 2.1% and the pods are around 15cm in length. Perhaps Sally-in-Wales can do a taste test for us for future purchases. Based on a low estimate of 200 pods per kg it works out at about 13p a pod!
Can you pm me with the quantity you want in multiples of 10 please. Put Vanilla as the subject of your message.
I will place the order when it looks as if I won't need to find a use for a kg of vanilla and then work out more accurate costs. Postage is going to be pretty low, pods don't weigh much.
Better go and tidy my message box.

I think various relatives are going to be getting kilner jars for Christmas, filled with maybe 5 pods and topped up with caster sugar. Would make very nice prezzies I reckon and at this price extremely affordable

message with order sent this afternoon, thank you for taking the trouble.

I just mentioned this to Mrs JB again. When I said it works out at about 13p a pod her response "I'll have 50" and she meant it
(not as silly as it sounds - if they'll keep for two years she'll take a load into the school to resell to the kids rather than have the kids pay a pound a pod in the local supermarket)
|
Cathryn
|
Anymore anyone?
|
Cathryn

All weighed out now. Will let you know total to pay this weekend.
You can go off vanilla you know.

Simon
|
Why's it locked? Just wondering. Thought it must be Vanilla Mafia or somfink?
|
Cathryn
|
Because just as I finished counting out 934 vanilla pods I got another message from someone else asking for some.
So stop cheating that Simon *slapping wrists sharply*
I'll open it again when I am about to post out.

stick some in sugar and use the sugar liberally. Make icecream or custard and scrape a whole pod into it
|
Cathryn
|
Ice cream sounds rather good.
They are shorter but fatter than usual aren't they.
(And I edited your post Jema. )

Ooh, ooh, ooh, mine arrived too, thank you VERY much
I was expecting to see a "What do I do with all this vanilla" thread
Here's what I'll be making:
Vodka, fresh lemon juice, vanilla sugar and soda with a few slices of lime and crushed ice.
Will HAVE to make some vanilla ice-cream (hmmm, could do that with my niece next week!).

Me too, I saw the envelope and thought, "ooh, what's that" (in the way you do when an exciting looking parcel arrives, or is that just me?), then I got a waft

Mine arrived today, what a lovely smell, and they look good quality too.
I've got cracking already; a simple baked egg custard with a pint of milk, 4 eggs, two egg yolks, some caster sugar and a lovely fat vanilla pod. yummy.

At that sort of price, it increases your choices in how to use them Ours are diminishing fast.
|
Cathryn
|
It's going to cost me quite a bit...
Lottie called to pick her's up earlier and left me with a box of lovely deep brown eggs. I am now determined to get my hen house back and add a marran, a blue egg layer (yes Chez, I know who to come to) and a white egg layer to the current flock. Everytime I have any contact with downsizers it costs me a fortune.

Baileys Creme Brulee
Serves 4
4 egg yolks
25g castor sugar
1 vanilla pod so .... if you ordered 50 you can make lots!
250ml cream
100ml Baileys
2 tablespoons demerara sugar
Mix egg yolks and castor sugar together in a bowl. Pour cream and Baileys into a saucepan. Scrape seeds from vanilla pod and add to pan. Bring to boil. Whisk into egg mixture. Pour into ramekins. Place in a deep tray and pour hot water into tray until it comes halfway up ramekins. Bake \t 150 degrees C for 20 minutes ish! (check after 15 - may need up to 25) until just set. Should still be wobbly. Cool then chill in fridge. Before serving sprinkle top with demerara sugar and caramelise under a very hot grill or using blowtorch. Enjoy.
