thanks Mochyn, how's your meat boys doing? Should be ready soon eh?

What colour eggs do they lay? Just asking, that's all.

Her legbars lay blue. And the trad crosses lay a lovely brown.
Answering because I know she's gone to Oswestry show this PM .
I second Mochyn's talking-up of Pookie's birds - she is a really meticulous poultry keeper.

What are Welsumers like for laying?
A couple of the first five we've got are Welsumer/Cream Legbar crosses - but they haven't started laying yet, so no idea what they'll be like.

They are great, they were our first hens. Friendly, entertaining no urge to fly over fences.

So they aren't like bloody Marans then or the "evil bitch queens" as they are more commonly known here!

Thanks for the recomendations guys
managed not to purchase any livestock from Oswestry, just a touch of heatstroke and some plants, oh and some huge danish pastries
The Welsummers are lovely, a touch bigger than the legbars, and lay a dark brown, slightly speckley egg, they lay quite well and are not flighty.
The RIRXLS girls are soo friendly and lay big medium brown eggs as Chez said.
Remaining Gold appenzeller now also reserved STC
(they lay pure white eggs just in case you were wondering Cathryn )

Oooh, lucky it's gone as I was wanting a pure white layer as well.
Still struggling to get my (large holds at least a dozen) henhouse moved, another good thing possibly.

My marans are lovely, docile , good egg layers--wots wrong with yours? I've got some jersey giants this year just because I like them[ ] and they are the nicest natured chickens I've ever had---even nicer than marans.
p.s. the above does not apply to maran cockrels

Phew, I am so glad you said that Lottie.

I had some Rhodies--the last two hens are going in the pot this week, the cocks were really agressive , the hens not great layers and very flighty, good foragers to be fair---I'm sure other people love them but not for me. I've hatched some light sussex so I'll give them a try as well----nice break--back to fence building

I think it depends on the individual bird. I have a rhode island red boy who is a lovely boy, never been any problem and I keep him for breeding, however I have also had evil, (evil I tell you ) offspring off him.
My cuckoo maran girl is a lovely placid, 'no trouble' type too, so I don't think it's just down to the breed.

Will somebody buy the welsummers and legbars. Please? Or I'll have an accidental paypal slip, and then I'll have some serious explaining to do. And a divorce to file for, probably.

Welsummer girls and Cream Legbar pairs still tantalisingly available!
sorry WW

Baggage!
You can explain to my husband why I have come home with specifically forbidden chickens! When I go down to four days a week, I'm having them anyway, whatever he says. But that's not confirmed yet, so I need to wait until it comes off.

Oh I will, does he like cake?

They're VERY low maintenance, WW. *Particularly* Pookie's girls, of course. She has them all trained to do the washing up and be helpful around the house.

In that case I'll have a dozen, and even himself won't mind! He doesn't like cake though - no sweet tooth
