Vermiculite

I have two large sacks of this, which himself kindly brought home from a building project for me, as it says on the sack 'can be used for gardening'

mixing with potting compost to make it looser and more open textured but still maintain a good amount of moisture retention.

It also has good buffering capacity, so held keep compost from going too acid.

In my experience it aids drainage rather than water retention. I think people sprinkle it on top of pots after sowing so that seedlings can grow out easily.

I thought perlite aids drainage, and vermiculite held water while still keeping an open texture...but I may be wrong.

I've got two sacks left over that the builders bought by mistake, they've been here two years. If you've got clay soil it would be great for improving it.

James, I thought exactly the same as you until I tried to use some as cat litter, when i quickly realised that absorbency was not one of its strong points!!! Rolling Eyes
