Very old tools

I've been sorting out the shed and came across loads of beautiful old tools. Thing is they're past it (i think). There are loads of saws with wooden handles, the teeth are rounded not pointy. There are loads of planes which I'm sure are all b*ggered too. Do I sling them, scrap them, give em away??? Can bring myself to put them in the bin.

There's a slim chance some may be valuable. Rather than just bin them there are people who take them and clean them up and sell them on. I love old tools and have managed to clean up some I found here when I moved in. Some wooden framed planes we just too far gone though.

If you have to bin them could you take them to the local tip and give them to the people who run it, I bet they will be able to spot what can be reused.

no no no!!!!

Old tools can be quite valuable, depending on the maker and condition. There are many tool collectors out there.

If you don;t want them, bung em on ebay, I guarantee they will sell.

I love old tools, there is something a bit special about them.

Had thought of the tip - I wonder if its worth taking them to a carboot. Always seem to be some old boy who knows his saws from his butter knives!
Not realised there could be any 'worth' to them other than being nice to look at.

Ebay it is then!

You can always pop a picture on here and see if anyone is interested.

aww, man. this thread is killing me. i collect tools from all over. i scour flea markets, garage sales, online sales, you name it. i like to clean them up, make them presentable and display them. sure, as for as antique value i'm doing a bad thing, but that doesn't bother me. as a cabinetmaker of over 20 years, i guess it just comes natural to do this. i have many handmade planes and some nice hard to find factory made colletor items. here's a few:

Thanks, NVM, they look fantastic! Now I know who to ask if I find anything strange. I found some wooded planes like the bottom photos but they just crumpled when picked up. Sad I have a few braces and bits that are fine and usable.

To clarify my original comments, I've met people who think their old tools may be worth a fortune but after looking around places here they may only be worth a little money if they can be restored and not many tools are worth large sums. I certainly don't suggest binning them though.

Wow they look great. I have most of the tools on the second picture down. I'll get a pic by the end of today for you.

Lust-inducing pics, NVM! I'm a fan of old gardening tools, although I don't collect them, just ogle other peoples. Particularly by-pass blade tools (secateurs, shears, clippers etc.) after doing a project on them at University. Did you know the Romans used something like a basic wool shear for topiary? Now, there's another bit of useless information for you. There's a historic tool society, you know... Calm down, NL...

Anyone who is interested might want to check out a small charity called Tools For Self Reliance -

http://www.tfsr.org/

They specialise in refurbishing tools and shipping them over to needy communities in Africa. I have donated almost all of my late father's tools to them - despite the tools being in all sorts of states of disrepair! - and they were very grateful.

There's another thread somewhere here in Downsizer about it - I'll have a mosey around and see if I can find it - give me a day or two Wink Very Happy

There are usually adverts in "free ad" type papers for " old tools" wanted, might be worth a try, bearing in mind they are dealers and are only interested in resale value.
I have a set of wood chisels that belonged to my late grandfather, pre 1945 steel, keep a fantastic edge.Much better than any chisel available today.
Silas

Yes I agree. Footrprint, marples and sorby chisels are great. Sorbey still make great tools, but they are VERY expensive.

Here are some of them-the rest are under a huge pile of shed stuff which I can't face shifting. There are 2 more planes - 1 box? saw - a spirit level - a couple of other things that I dont know the name of but are in the picture above.

here we go - 2nd attempt

Me too. My late father was a master builder and I had a load of his very old tools - they were gorgeous. Sadly our garage was burgled the year before we moved to Wales and the b*stards nicked the lot, along with a load of other stuff. We did get brand new things through the insurance, which Gervase enjoyed hugely (boys and their shopping lists for tools Rolling Eyes) but I still miss my Dad's old thngs... Crying or Very sad
