Virtual networkI have been asked to look into setting up some kind of virtual network for the organisation I work for. Really highlights how backward it is at using IT currently as they are asking me to do this. So, naturally, I thought I would ask you...
- We want to be able to share ideas, discuss issues and come up with solutions.
- We are spread across a large county and if this works three large counties and if it really works, Wales. Geography is always an issue in rural Wales, this is intended to help.
- IT ability of those involved...I am not sure except even more basic than mine in some cases.
Should I be talking to Jema do you think? Or looking at some kind of email group?
I am thinking out loud really and could just do with a bit of input from people who use something similar. What have you found works well for a group of people with differing abilities but a high level of commitment?

Errr - Number of questions
Is there a need for individual projects to be discussed privately by group membership ?
Do you already have a LAN/WAN/intranet set up for the company?
Would a forum like this work with different work areas?
How about a Twiki http://twiki.org/ - That can be used for collaborative working

www.wikispaces.com is a good wiki for collaborative working. Not just editable but a page for comment and discussion.
The links are very good on this one and you can deep link to a message board if you prefer the medium for discussion.
If you like applications you can embed skype or IM on the page as well.
As an aid to choosing a wiki try here

Yes that's exactly the idea. I think, I am still feeling through how this might work, it is basically translating and dramatically improving I hope the network ofmeetings that currently happen. Some of which tend to be very ineffective, in my not so humble opinion. Something like this will focus discussion.
Yep, LAN
YEs this type of forum would but it is my lack of experience with other types whichled to me askign the questions, they might work better.
Right I will look up wiki/twiki, I have had this conversation with someone else on here but that was about using a wiki as an information resource rather than a discussion group.

Twiki's are a bit more than just wiki's - they allow individual workspaces to be set up - we have one at work and to be honest we've only really scraped the surface of it

I am going to do some research into it. Thank you for your help both. I find it an exciting idea but I need to know what I am doing up to a point before being able to enthuse others. This rather sums up my work currently.
I suspect I will be back. :

Yahoo Groups is pretty good for simple online collaboration, it's free and very simple to use.

Set yourself up a MFF forum - it's easy and you'll be up and running in minutes.
Some sort of forum for collaborative communications and sharing of ideas is essential. I wouldn't bother at all with anything technical and fancy until you've tested the water and seen how people respond to the collaboration and use the forum.

If you have two or more LANs you can link them into a single network (a WAN) by bridging two boxes (routers iirc) over the internet. You should be able to do this via two ASDL connections although a DSL line would be better.
This will enable all the machines to talk to each other on the same private network and to share private servers in either location. Just create your wiki or forum on a server inside the network.
If you are new to it it may well be safer and easier to pay a networking company or person to do it for you.
Just putting a private discussion board or wiki on the internet is another option but then you are exposing it to the internet at large and relying on the security of the forum or wiki.

also if you are running SBS it has a number of built in group networking options such as joint projects, calendars, shared files etc etc
