Wanted: Scary sanitary ware ...We are re-jiggling our bathrooms to accommodate a lodger ... and I am baulking at the idea of paying out for a new suite. So instead, I have hit on the idea of a 'mix and match' different coloured set up (which Arvo flinched when I told him about and muttered something about 'glory or disaster' ).
Does anyone have any scary old toilets/basins/straight bath that they might want a home for? Bright colours and ceramic (or metal, I suppose, for the bath) the only requirements .... We need two loos, two basins and one bath (as have already swapped hatching eggs for Judith's old bath, so her OH could stack a kitchen in their spare room ).
It's a crazy idea, but it might just work ...

Try your local recycling centre Chez, loads of white ones always at ours.
Hmmm might start a thread on my blasted toilet seat...(yes, all those who have visited remember the one, tropical... Won't stay screwed in...

Chez, the only place for scary-coloured [plastic] baths is on allotments, for growing carrots in.

Did I ever show you the huuge blue and white transferware sink that used to be in the said bathroom?
Think it's still in the barn...

Have you tried posting a 'wanted' message on your local Freecycle? Complete bathroom suites come up from time to time here, and people do request them too; toilets meet with accidents readily in student houses, it seems...
Or you could go skip-hunting if you're near to a university town - as the students go home for summer, a lot of landlords seem to be refurbishing properties and 'skipping' an awful lot of stuff.

Really? You did tell me about it ... but I thought you were joking .
So, do you all think I'm mad, then? I mean, if I had £500 plus to spend on kit for each bathroom I'd go for something really modern and white, with clean lines ... but I rather like the idea of a complete mish-mash, and spending any extra cash on drilling through the 2ft thick outside wall to collect the grey water for the garden ... .

How much of a hurry are you in? Himself fits bathrooms, so should have some coming up - I'm just not sure what's on the cards in the next few weeks. I'll ask him when he comes home.

Ooooh, that would be lovely, WW! Plumbing Chap reckons he's coming back in July. I reckon that means August, probably .

I can see the appeal of a multi coloured suite, but, its worth bearing in mind possibly that most of the colourful stuff is quite old now and might look really shabby- I could be being horribly overcautious though.
When we replaced our bathroom we got a loo sink and bath from a local DIY place for under £100, its not fancy, but its done us fine so far. Might be worth seeing if you can get your sleek white set more cost effectively than you thought?

I have been cruising the 'Plumbing' section of the Screwfix catalogue, I will admit; but we are on a *very* tight budget. I am kind of thinking that our favourite price at the moment will be 'free' - and then we can save up and upgrade to something less terrifying in a couple of years.
The idea is to get the second bathroom in as an ensuite in our quite large spare room, that has a separate entrance - and then get a lodger in ASAP to help our finances.
Although, there is also the question about whether the lodger will be charmed or terrified by multicolours .

We have a bright blue bathroom---priced up a new one when we moved then decided I could live with it and ignore the kids comments----multicoloured could be even more unusual though
Just had 2 quotes for a kitchen---both of which are more than our first house cost---so now thinking I'd rather live in squalour and buy more land---but I don't need to please a lodger---perhaps the outlay would be more than recouped in more rent?

It would, Lottie, I'm sure - but, we can't charge more than £350 pcm without it impacting on our tax credits etc. etc.. It's more to keep them out of our hair than make it more income-generating at this stage. The plan is to rent it out as a room for a bit - and then save up and put a galley kitchen in and do holiday lets or something similar in a couple of years.
Upfront cash is an issue though; we have very, very little of the folding stuff floating around.
Kitchens - the last two we have had, I have designed myself and bought from Ikea, then installed with help from a joiner. They look great and both cost under £1000.

You just need the right lodger then who likes cheerful
I have found screwfix very good---haven't they a sale at the minute?---still everythings dearer than free----I have seen baths offered for free in freepress type things before now.

We installed our Ikea kitchen but have found the quality of the doors fairly poor.
Three years down the line and they're chipping and cracking
As a lodger I would quite like a mish mash bathroom I think
