There's a good shop in Exeter called R. L. Hira - they might be worth a phone call.

Our Tesco's sometimes has them. I bought some last year to grow...but never got around to it.
They're supposed to be quite ornamental and easy to grow as long as you put them somewhere warm and give 'em plenty of water.
I'll look next time I'm in.

We used to buy them in South Africa. In SA, they are called madumbis. Lovely taste!

Eddoes have a bunch of different names as they are common like potatoes in Indian, Thai, African and Caribbean cuisine.
A London colleague got me hooked on their taste and I love to cook this kind of food. As I have a larger allotment this year I'm going to put in an experimental 'plantation' of them and see how I get on. I'd like to start them off in my new greenhouse before planting them out. And yes, they do have that jungle plant look which is bound to get the allotment curtain twitchers chins wagging.
I've tried calling around a few of the exotic grocers found on the internet and they're either 'out of business' or out of stock, even though this is the time of year to get eddoes. Will try the link supplied and the shop in Exeter - thanks!!!

I seem to recall my friend telling me that a colony of plants needs to establish over two years and then there is a continuous rolling stock of tubers to eat.

how does that work?
do you just rummage around and pull out a few tubers without digging up the whole plant?

I've now planted my eddoes in separate pots in a coldframe so will drop in some photos here from time to time.

Something like that!!! As I'm never grown these things before, it'll be tricky to pinpoint when the plants are 'mature' so there will no doubt be some rummaging!!!
