This happens an awful lot. Most of the spam email we see (several hundred thousand a day) are from spoofed email address.

The message subject is son#1's name, then,it comes from his address- ie his hotmail a/c has been hacked

No, it hasn't. It just looks like it.

I get those all the time, from one or other of my addresses, and my accounts haven't been hacked.
it is the way spammers can do it, apparently. It makes it more realistic.

That's a possibility but it's more likely that his email address is being used. Anyone can do this, for instance in Outlook if you specify xyz@example.com in the 'from' field that is who the email will appear to be from. This isn't an Outlook issue.
You can better much better information from the email headers.

Will tell him that. He is also using a Spybot programme to check what is up. Not sure how that works, and he wont be back for a bit.

the from address in an E-Mail can be set to whatever they want by the spammers. It's almost definitely spoofed

Yep, people don't hack accounts to send spam to the hacked account. Not worth the effort.

Still doesn't explain how they then send emails to his contacts.. that means access to the account, which should be by password I assume
